But in my defense I did go for simplicity – boiled rice with boiled cabbage.

neil, did we flat together here in wellington?

because that is sounding very, very familiar :)

  • Speaker: All Been Said,

Um, I think that's the whole point of a haka. You don't perform a posture dance with the intention of maintaining a sense of humility.

but the intention isn't to pronounce to the world "I AM AN OVER-DRAMATISING COCK", surely?

  • Stories: Memorable Meals,

Any number of tables groaning with dishes for parties at our house. I don't have Che's finesse, but I do know how to make a whole lot of food appear at once and have people like it. I find preparing big feasts quite meditative.

i'm calling bullshit on that quote.

that PA christmas dinner you and your darling put on one was absolutelyfuckingfantastic.

even if i did turn up late.

  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

I think you were probably on the money when you suggested at the beginning of the thread that someone inside the bubble got scared and talked to the cops.

it was doubtless a very hazy, very smokey, very peaceful bubble.

then some numnut brought along some p.

If, as leaks and gossip suggest, some of those involved have been discussing ways and means of killing political leaders, they've gone right past legitimate dissent.

indeed. why the hell assassinate a leader in a place you can just vote them out?

but referring to the last part of your comment. that would be my only concern about the way the police have acted. if they are drawing legitimate dissenters into this circle, and tarring them with the "terrorism" brush, then we're into a whole nother kind of hazy place.

i'm happy to surrender a modicum of civil rights to ensure collective security. but the second that surrender is abused by zealous security forces, we all need to start becoming concerned.

the invasion of the privacy of those friends of stephen judd's, for example.

  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

My knowledge didn't go far past the fact that there were discussions about assassinating Key amongst some of the people arrested in Auckland, but the SST aired that yesterday. The gossip seems to have been about that, so perhaps something was said that made the cops think it was time to wade in

jesus... this thread is a marathon. i haven't time to read it all.

    but.

<not a terroist>if you wanted to assassinate a new zealand politician, why in the hell would you need a bunch of military weapons?

most pollies are so exposed you could probably take one out with a blunt object during a fundraiser dinner.</not a terrorist>

well, a special thanks to deborah for enjoying the meal.

they don't always turn out so well. but! at least there were only three courses.

i fed a number of PAS people on this occasion.

14 people, 12 dishes, and one hell of a day of cooking.

but, if you're going to do an easter/pagan festival, you have to do it right.

we're already planning the next one. you can't guarantee a decent autumn without it!

  • Southerly: Energy Special, Part 3:…,

An interesting theory David. I had never thought previously about people as a form of energy - it felt wrong.

i'm not so sure. from my distant study of classics (undergrad), it was slavery that prevented both the hellenes and the romans from developing machinery.

they couldn't see past slavery as the primary method of adding value (i.e., have clay, have slave, slave make urn, i sell urn), and consequently they weren't pressured to develop new or more efficient means of production.

so david is right, the romans seem to have gone "crap.. no slaves... need to find more (and distant) places to find slaves" instead of "i have limited labour, therefore i need to find a work around".

  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

So where did the idea of serpents come from in snake-free NZ? According to Servant, it had to be the Bible.

i read somewhere that when early colonial maori wanted to pretend they were speaking english they'd make a "sss, ssss" sound, the same way that people today imitate german by going "icken sprecken icken".

might be some link there, though one you'd want to put 'actual research' into.

  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

Frankly, the sorts of cops who'd move there [Queensland] are the sort we are better off without. Clint Rickards and friends would fit right in.

    it's pretty bad all over.

did i already mention the story about a mate who got beat up in a home invasion by an off-duty nsw police officer?

he fled to the nearest station (why? dunno?), and filed a report.

    the report was subsequently "lost".

    @ stephen c.

sorry to interpose myself between you and kowhai, but you could check out judith binney "redemption songs" for a great source on te kooti.

if i'm right it's the authoritative source.
