So did anyone see The Bourne Supremacy tonight?
It featured three New Zealand actors, namely: Karl Urban, Marton Csokas, and ... John Key.
In case you missed it, here he is, playing a CIA agent:

Official NZ Media Guide to 'Moving On' (or not):
Ancient History: the sins of Fay, Richwhite.
Always Remembered: the sin of Trevor Chappell.

Not enough news in NZ? Of course there is. The newshounds just need to unblock their noses.
With a nod to the other thread, imagine this happening:
American Secretary of State / British Foreign Secretary says, before the Senate / Commons, that leading figures in business, with strong ties to previous administrations of both parties, are crooks. Not off the top of his head, but after a major investigation.
That's your lead story on CNN / BBC, and all over the media. Accompanied by pages of background, interviews, analysis, the works. Even our own networks in NZ would pick up their drama and run it. Well, it would be ready-made imported footage, no additional work required.
But when it happens yesterday, under our noses ... we barely bother with it. The stories are there, we just have to give a damn.

If the plane people wanted top billing they shouldn't have landed safely, should they?

Good point, Richard.
But for a money story to break through past sex/death/celebrity/drugs to the top of the bulletin, it needs the essential qualification ... taxpayers' money. That pushes the buttons. Outrage-ometer is on high.
Otherwise it's just numbers and that's boring as.
Plus the average age of reporters is 12 and three quarters, and they have no idea who this Richwhite person is. Was he a yachtie or something?

I'm wary of NZ moving towards a press culture where certain topics never get mentioned, for example, if they are seen as potentially upsetting to some members of the community.
Support of freedom of the press means supporting publishing of not just the views you agree with, but also the views you disagree with.
I'm not sure what you mean by "certain topics", perhaps you could clarify?
And some perspective here: Coddington has not been arrested, fined, sacked, slagged off by her editor/employer, or suffered any repercussions whatsoever except being criticised. Hardly an attack on freedom of the press.
And the Press Council's remit doesn't run to swoops on cafes and doctors' waiting-rooms. The damage is being done daily, every time an "Asian" - or a potential bigot - picks up the wretched magazine.

Beyond outrage. Beyond satire. It's just one big piss-take now. Perhaps they've all been told they're losing their jobs and they just wanna have fun? Anyway, I am not making this up, but ...
Deal Or No Deal footage leads 3 News tonight

I don't think the public gives too much thought to public transport (I wish they did).
We're talking about Britain here. A lot of voters virtually live on public transport. It's a long way from work to the nearest affordable house.

I wouldn't normally reply to stuff like this - it's too time consuming, but you've really got me rarked up (which I expect was the point).
Sadly, I think you're right, Rich. If it's any consolation, you've done a pretty good demolition job.
My sincere apologies if there are personal circumstances which have made it impossible for the guest Speaker to be online at all since the original post, but if that is not the case, I think it's pretty disappointing that there has been no response to the many valid points in this thread. That's, like, a debate, man.
Still, judging by the tone of the original post, I suppose arguments to the contrary are simply not worth a response. We object, ergo, we are fools.
My own fault, I guess. I'll try and ignore such laughably ill-informed nonsense in future.

3news has gotten more and more sloppy - Duncan Garner is getting way too opinionated
And how. He was way, way over the top tonight.
Memo to Duncan: It's not your job, but Kathryn Rich's, to tell us Maharey is smarmy. You then report what she (or any other politico) says. Pretty simple really.
Your own opinion is of no importance or interest, and if you just have to share it, get another job.
