  • Public Address Word of the Year 2008,

I could check, but I'm pretty sure it's now __infa__structure.

Yup, New Zullund English has made its mark on that one.

"Rofflenui" or variants thereof must be in the running somewhere.

And both Brisbane and Auckland seem to have a variance in attitude towards anyone with a non Western face. I'm often arriving with folks from Asia and am appalled and embarrassed at the way they are treated by Immigration, MAF and the Police.

There's not much rhyme or reason to it. I arrived back from China with my partner with three bulging bags, and we were waved through without an issue. OTOH, when she returned here after a visit in 2005, both her bags were searched from top to bottom, and she finally came through the gate two hours later after everything had been scrutinised and left for her to repack.

I know it's too soon to speculate on what will happen in India after today's events in Mumbai.

But this seems an apposite thread in which to say: holy shit.

    Christ.

How long before the US actually bankrupts itself? Or does it still have the global clout to zoom down into astounding negative figures and not lose its collective shirt?

Sorry, that would be Matthew Poole's acquaintances. My bad for the confusion.

    - 20,000 died in the Musket Wars
    - 2,700 died at Gallipolli

Not to sanction your flagwaving friends' logic, but neither of those were a single deadly surprise attack on a purely civilian target in peacetime, as a hypothetical American might quickly point out. They're still terrible wounds on our country, but 9/11 was a very different beast.

I believe I was supposed to register with the police within 24 hours when I visited China in 2006, because I was staying with a local family. I managed not to do so for a good two months, until the requirement popped up as a roadblock when I came to get my tourist visa renewed. We went to a police station and promptly got retroactive signoff for my presence, and everything was gravy.

I think I was supposed to declare myself when we went to stay in hotels as well, but the question never arose. They're almost certainly far tougher on it in the wake of the Olympics though. Can't imagine having to get full documentation for longer stays. Mr Taslov, your thoughts?
