  • Hard News: The back of a bloody envelope,

Deborah has put this rather well I think.

    Seconded.

"The dream is over". What an utterly horrid, contemptible person the Minister is.

"Kick in the pants" is not much better.

  • Hard News: Transferring wealth to Wellington,

For years we've talked about "the Beehive" directing things, not Wellington.

That's because you're in Wellington. We (often) do say "Wellington" as shorthand for govt. Trust me, it's no slight on any Wellingtonians, or on Wellingtonians in general.

ETA: or trust Russell, if you consider him easier to trust. ;)

Of course, anyone who doesn't agree with you must be stupid, if not out right EVIL.

Hey, just because you think someone is stupid or evil, doesn't mean that it's necessarily because they disagree with you.

Note that Key said that such dissention was acceptable because it was about an issue that "specifically" involved Kaye's electorate. The impression given was that dissent about national issues may not be so easily tolerated.

  • Hard News: Transferring wealth to Wellington,

Saw Hyde interviewed on Triangle last night. The interviewer, David Beatson, claimed that his legal advice was that, contrary to claims, the council will not be able to sack CCO directors without "due cause".

Hyde denied this, but fudged somewhat, claiming both that such sackings were "possible" and that the issue was not worth worrying about because it would "never happen".

I sure wish someone would clarify these Supercity issues.

    etc etc...

Any foreign mining operation here will never make significant profits, because - surprise, surprise - it's not in their interest, tax-wise, to do so.

    O/T

    Yo, Sacha
In case you were unaware, there was a fifteen-minute interview with Hide, about Supercity, tonight on a Triangle TV show called Beatson Interview (8:30-9:00pm) (second half of show). It appears to be repeated tomorrow at 8:00am.

If someone feels like recording it, I have a feeling that some of his comments may come to be contradicted in future.

Ohh, (sucks index finger) I dunno. Maybe ;)

    ... Was that sarcasm?

Isn't it true that people had tools before they grouped all those things together as "tools"? Doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to say "that thing is an axe, but not a tool". "Art" may be different; I don't know.

Keith hits the Herald pages again.

Blogger Keith Ng last night looked at the Government's numbers on the Public Address website saying wages for miners weren't as lucrative as they appeared.

Ng said the median income for wage and salary earners in mining during 2008 was actually $57,660, a long way off the "output per worker" of $360,000 quoted by Energy and Resources Minister Gerry Brownlee.

"Wow, $360,000, that's heaps! If we were all miners, we'd all be rich!

"Here's what Gerry did. He took the total worth of the mining sector, then divided it by the number of people it employed. It does not mean that more mining = higher productivity. It just means that mining is very capital-intensive and employs relatively few people, which are fairly obvious facts," said Ng.
