  • Hard News: The First Draft,

Well, the tone has been more along the lines of 'well, he's provided some figures which seem plausible and he's quite charming really, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt'.

If the intention of the John Campbell interview was to nip him in the bud, then it's a spectacular backfire, as far more people seem to a) have heard of him, and b) be inclined to give him head room than before.

Shows the danger of paying attention to these cranks and thus legitimising them.

  • Hard News: The First Draft,

The number of apparently sane, rational people who seem inclined to believe Ken Ring really has staggered me - they've been popping up all over the place since that John Campbell interview.

I'm going to hold my head in my hands and weep quietly for a bit, I think.

  • Hard News: What Now?,

Since the quake I've been able to contribute nothing besides a donation, and the sense of being nothing more than a spectator to so much misery has been frustrating.

The bit about urging the media to change the script the really jumped out at me. I am going to act on this fellow's plea and write to various media to voice my opinion that the media should shift their focus on how efficiently and how equitably the services are being restored.

    More or less my reaction.

Does anyone have any ideas as to who the most useful targets for any sort of correspondence would be?

  • Hard News: What Now?, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

I do struggle to keep up with where the moral high ground is at any given moment.

Yes, I find it has this tendancy to unexpectedly liquefact under one's feet.

Kudos to The Herald for reprinting the refugee city article this morning.

  • Hard News: The First Draft, in reply to Steve Barnes,

And our esteemed Prime Minister has one.

I try reasonably hard to not make unwarrented personal attacks on, for example, National politicians. Play the ball and all that.

But it gets a bit difficult when you see him strolling around in one of those...

  • Hard News: The First Draft,

OK then, for another distraction, what about those plastic hologram bracelets that are very popular at the moment, particularly with sportspeople? I also notice some politicians wearing them. They cost about $100 and many people (including those well aware of scientific method) swear by them.

They are an excellent tool for easy visual identification of credulous fools. The best part about this particular tool is that you don't need to pay for it yourself.

  • Hard News: The First Draft,

Why was Ken Ring even given airtime?

I realise that the media is not usually all that brilliant at self-policing who does or does not get airtime, but it seems reasonably self-evident that he would have been better off left on some street corner shouting about how the aliens were controlling our thoughts via lasers in our brains, or similar.

  • Hard News: Welfare: Back to the Future?,

Another really shitty idea from the UK, coming to NZ soon?

Re-categorise everyone as seeking work, get a computer to test their ability to work, et voila!

  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?, in reply to Lex Miller,

A colleague has a Japanese friend who is studying in ChCh who was skyping her parents in Japan when it hit, and lost the connection.

Colleague eventually managed to get through to Japanese friend to make sure she was alright, but couldn't immediately call her parents because of the language barrier. Done now, fortunately.

Any word from Ian or Joe Wylie yet?
