  • Hard News: The digital switch-off, in reply to Tom Semmens,

What is the difference between a loan and a deferred payment?

I'll have to try this one out if I ever see him down the pub. 'Ey, Steve-o my old chum, any chance you could deferred payment option me $20 to tide me over to pay day? No, no, no. Not a loan. Perish the thought.'

  • Hard News: About Arie, in reply to Kracklite,

It is a little-known fact (ie. I made it up) that donuts are, like the wafer in Catholic Communion, sacred food, being representations of Ouroboros and the cyclic nature of time.

O my brother. You have strayed so very, very far from the True Path of O.

There is no O but the Bagel O.

Burn the Heresiarch! Cleanse him with fire!

  • Hard News: About Arie,

if it wasn't for the threat of police beating and cellmate rapings i'd be out plundering and murdering my way thru downtown wellington as we speak

Yes indeed. Back in the good old days, when we could hang 'em, flog 'em, boil 'em, rack 'em, crush 'em and burn 'em, I am reliably informed that things like pirates and bandit gangs were in fact completely mythical. It is only in these sad days of wet liberal PC-gone-mad that these myths have, sadly, become a reality.

the fear of violence is meant to be built into our way of dealing with extremely minor robbery

Screaming pansy liberal Winston Churchill once noted that the civilisation of a society can be judged by the way it treats its prisoners.

The 'violent' sanction that society employs is the threat of loss of liberty and rights that go along with that. Although a certain amount of force is required in order to carry out that sanction, it is a 'passive' sanction, as opposed to the 'active' infliction of physical harm on the citizenry.

  • Field Theory: Webstock and Wheels,

After the interview I asked Amanda if she'd actually like to do a big "Rammstein-esque" show. "Yes, but only if someone else would pay for it". Though she did say that that the Dresden Dolls were invited to open for Rammstein once, they turned it down when they thought about how the fans might react.

Just for clarification: does 'the fans' refer to Dresden Dolls fans, or Rammstein fans?

I'd certainly go to that double bill.

    Mozzarella is post-buffalo, though.

    Just sayin'.

Edit: apart from all that mozzarella fior di latte which they make. Doh.

I'd never waste good money on it

My copy is provided 'free' through work. Which didn't stop me cancelling my 'free' HoS subscription, even though it took considerably more effort to cancel it than to keep it going.

Maybe I've spent too much time delving the depths of Your Views, where such sentiments about Field Marshal Brownlee would be uttered with absolute sincerity. It definitely throws one's grasp of satirical utterance completely out of whack.

Other people watch wildlife documentaries. I read the letters page of The Herald. The common element is the fascination with an almost alien world that runs by rules very different to those of the world I inhabit.

Mining today's letters page produced an outstanding gem from an old lady complaining about giving 'quake traumatised 3-year old children councilling. All this mollycoddling can only lead to mental softness and namby-pambyism, apparently. They'll grow up spineless and molly-coddled. She lived through The Blitz, you see, so she knows what she's talking about. Suffering is good for them. Toughens them up.

  • Hard News: Nothing important, just some tunes, in reply to Danielle,

It's a bit disturbing how many of Bill's bits are still completely relevant.

Innit. But I've been reading a lot of history recently, and it's a bit disturbing how often the same shit keeps cropping up.

  • Cracker: It's a Wonderful Thing, in reply to JackElder,

Exit Planet Dust came out in 1995. If you were, say, 20 then, you're 35 now, heading towards 36. Hello me. Time moves quietly in the background, and it's easy to think "hey, that only came out recently" and then realise that you mean it was 16 years ago.

The Chemical Brothers, on the other hand, that's totally old-person music. Dad-electronica

If I told you that my copy is on vinyl, would it help? Is vinyl cool again yet?

I'm gonna keep on rockin' forever! forever.....forever.....forever.....forever.
