  • Hard News: What did you do yesterday?, in reply to Danielle,

I'm going to the Auckland show on Saturday and I have basically ZERO expectations. I'm just going because, you know, it's Ringo. Religious pilgrimage type thing. Maybe it will be better than I think!

They said he was excellent -- and the band was tight as. Though G was appalled by the Toto songs. John Kelcher tweeted that he'd seen his first live Beatle and that he is a 'lovely human'.

Tonight my two teenagers and their dad went to Ringo Starr and co. They're just home, the teens blown away by their first big concert, their dad said it was great. here is Huia:

"Think of the loudest setting your stereo has. Double it. Tune everything up too full. Put on the best record your've got. Times by ten the sound quality. Then forget it. You have to SEE THEM LIVE to get the full sound experence."

As for Waitangi day: teenagers slept, ate and slobbed. Partner and I gently cleaned and oiled the chickens' legs (Rocket has scaly leg mite because she hasn't allowed herself to be caught for months. She came inside to talk today: seemed to be saying 'thanks; they feel better') Then I bought a Kindle for $149 at the Warehouse as part of my general technology upskilling. I can see the point of e-readers now. I wish I had bought the touchscreen because I even found myself on PAS -- but the screen keyboard was too tedious to post with. Then the boys made very edible homemade venison burgers.

It's an interesting thread: I too wondered whether I should be setting a Good Example, taking the kids somewhere cultural, and the day somehow became a Saturday. Garden and shop, kids and pets; sunny and nothing urgent to do: a Kiwi sort of day.

  • Hard News: The Next Act, in reply to TracyMac,

This past couple of weeks of pre-obits has been incredibly irritating.

I must throw up now. On the cover of NZ Women's Weekly's special issue, "Celebrating the life of our greatest broadcaster." Holmes was hardly Ed Hillary.

    Fags. And lots of them

Bugger. Poor man. Smoking is the hardest addiction to kick (I have done 12 years this May and I still want one sometimes, but I know it just doesn't work any more. Sigh.) In the days when PH started in broadcasting the air was so thick with smoke you had to join in to be able to work in the room. It was so ... cool.

  • Hard News: The Next Act,

I surprised myself by feeling rather sad for the old trout; 62 is way too young to die and he looked so very tired and ill. Holmes' friends in the media seemed like they and he had talked about how useless post-death obituaries are for the subject, and let him be entertained with all the pre-death obits. His media connections enabled him to do what many notables would love to do: had a crack at having the last word and shaping his "legacy".

So green, or is that a colour filter?

It's green by the river in our stretch, but the Port Hills behind are shimmering gold and today the sky is a see-forever blue.

I just loved that he was out walking the dog with his Mum, while piping.

I'm told it's good to practice piping while marching. My teen plays his chanter while marching from one end of the section and back again. The river walks will be an asset when he gets his pipes.
