'Lectric candyfloss. Pink moon up there; rainbow clouds at Sumner mid-afternoon down here (sadly no camera -- we've been where the phones don't go for a few weeks and I've become used to carrying Bug Balm rather than technology).

We are working on making sure ours are confident and capable in the water, for their enjoyment, and safety.

Absolutely. The coast, even if you do not live nearby, is part of the Kiwi psyche.

Last summer wasn't great here, and the water quality was iffy, so this summer has been a joy. Our pair are true water babies: we lived at the beach from before the boys were born until a couple of years ago. I spent that very hot summer six and seven months pregnant with the twins and body-boarding or floating in the water much of every day to escape the heat and gravity!

A plan for next year for our family is to go bush and tramping more often. After all, this country's easy access to the outdoors was one of the great draws for me to return from the big city years ago. Living in the city, even a small one, it's too easy to let that slide by.

What we've been doing in the holidays: surf school at Scarborough every day for the boys. It's a grand thing watching my two teenagers discover their passion; they came ashore the first day with that look of "I know what life is really about".

  • Hard News: Merry Christmas, you all, in reply to Steve Barnes,

What a huge project you are doing; I'm equal parts awestruck and envious. That is a serious plan, and the vids make it look so easy. How many metres are those sheets of long-run?

I'm quietly storing Christchurch demolition finds, mainly because I can't help myself; and it's criminal letting them go to waste. Latest was two sets of heavy kauri, multi-paned arch-top french doors for $130. So my thoughts are turning again to building.....

Actually, there are the Celtic tribes down South who may rebel sooner than the people of Parnell may consider appropriate.
    ;-)

We have. And we might just invade you all to get hold of that mudslide.

Hope every PAS person and their families have had fine, happy and full-piggery Christmases.

But I gotta say ‘Headless Body in Topless Bar’ is way up there!
    ;- )

Back in the mists of time, when dinosaurs like RD Muldoon roamed the earth, Henry Porter used that phrase in a book about the redtops. He said it was because the test of a good story/placement/headline was when one old trout turned to another on the bus or at work and said, "Hey Doris, did ya see...." That Ogilvy webpage doesn't credit Porter, but he may not be the originator either.

here’s a game of Ever Decreasing Circles

That's a sheep/cattle dog trick I believe; they are herding. Our old dog was insanely hard to walk on the beach with because he would herd us all until he was tripping up someone; tighter and tighter circles.

    That's a "Hey Doris" moment.

    Bill Direen

Well hell; it's Mayan New Year's Eve and I'm waiting for the apocalypse, which then led to thinking about my old friend Tom and how he would've been enjoying today enormously. Then Bildireen comes up...so I shall mention (because it's fated -- and I can see Tom's mouth and the cigarette smoke curling and twitching at that thought) the song he wrote called Beating Hearts about Aztecs and sacrifices.

Tom Scully was a good friend; we spent a lot of time prowling, ranting, smoking and hanging out when we were meant to be at journalism school. As this google turned up "he left the gig early".
