Hard News: The fake news problem, in reply to
So it’s an organised form of Google-bombing.
Yeah. And while liberals were busy Google-bombing Trump so that a search for "wankpuffin" delivered Trump results, the Russians were doing something a bit more focused.

Credible fact check sites are to be preferred to relying on MSM which reports $100,000 bottles of wine and “soft” interviews of Honest John, etc.
The Herald's failure to own the bottle-of-wine debacle was lamentable. But it's the same Herald that employs Kirsty Johnston, Matt Nippert and others. Blanket dismissals of the "MSM" are part of the problem.

I also note that The Herald and TV1 news tonight both have trouble spelling Hanmer Springs correctly in captions and headings.
Yeah, we noticed that too. Arrgh.

Thanks Prudence! It's actually a fairly demanding gig but I'm loving it.

So many people I know reported seeing the “earthquake lights” during the quake, and then Bryan Crump followed up with a bunch of people who’d reported the same to RNZ. So I thought I’d dig around a bit.
Turns out everyone (including RNZ’s news team) forgot there were lights reported over Christchurch in 2011.
And in 2014, there was a potential explanation offered in this paper.
There is some scepticism that they exist at all, but that seems largely based on the quality and variety of reports.
Well, there’s this now:
Them there’s this more spectacular Twitter video.
Someone I interact with fairly often on Twitter – and who is definitely not a nutter – says he saw a “red, blue, green bolt to the ground”, in Hastings.

Bloody hell! Turns out Fiona was half-awake, heard the deck creaking and vaguely wondered if someone was walking around out there.
So we went out and looked … and we appear to have a tiny bit of earthquake damage. In Auckland! Pretty sure that gap didn’t look like that yesterday.
Testament to the energy released at the epicentre.

120 seconds of tension release and tension inducement – not much sleep after that big one, but not really feeling the aftershocks that much here now in chch (personally)
They look to be moving north: two in the past hour near Paraparaumu and Levin respectively, saw one centred near Taihape earlier.

Zachary Bell’s video of the lights in the sky that followed the quake.

A scroll through Facebook indicates that most friends who were awake here in Auckland felt the swaying. Quite a lot of "if we felt that here, how bad is it further south?"

Camerman-journo Henry McMullan is surveying the impact around Kaikoura and posting the pics to his Twitter account. He posted this at 5.30am.
