  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?,

This afternoon, one of our very young grandmothers came in to drop off her grandchild. They had been away for a wee while, and we had wondered where they were because she’s always really good at letting us know. She had rung us yesterday to tell us that her brother had been killed in the cathedral spire, so when she came in, you can bet I was ready with open arms. They’ve had a rough few years this family, with close family members dying from illness, sudden and prolonged, and suicides, and now this. I just held her very tight.

I see that Emma had tweeted that she would like to see a place where all of the most poignant and beautiful eqnz posts could be. I think that would be fantastic.

There were a lot of kids had half days that day. Kath's daughter was in town because of that - her mum was completely unaware until after the fact ie after the girls had walked to Westhaven from town.

I would agree that one of the most productive ways to help people in Chch, and maybe our own economy, is to create jobs based there. I'm a bit wary of the "we're all in it together" thing, really. We can help out where possible, we can empathise and support, but at the end of the day, the only people who are in any given situation together are those to whom it has happened. It's a shared experience, and one must be careful not to take on ownership of others' pain.

I just wanted to say Emma that I thought you spoke most eloquently. I hadn't realised that the kids' school was in town - that's a big bummer. (Maybe not for Rihanna but.) The bit that really got me was when you talked about the words bottling up. For some reason, I found that incredibly poignant. The loss of power, of course, means that certain lines of communication are interrupted. But I hadn't thought of it as cutting off your means of expressing your self, getting those words out. Thank you.

Thanks for that, darling. I'm sort of stuck between thinking she's been pretty selfish, and then realising that, like you say, she hasn't got anything hugely practical to focus on.
