  • Hard News: Bean-Counting the Beat,

seeing as how most other tastes/formats are already catered for.

    really?
radio to me seems like 15 stations playing approximately the same format, maybe its just the suburb you live in.

  • Hard News: Bean-Counting the Beat,

Well If that is true then why haven't one, or several, of that legion of people who love country music and/or poprea get together and start a radio station?.

If it were that easy I'm sure they would. there's just the little matter of licensing a frequency which last I heard were going for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

There are side band frequencies of reduced power and range that can be used, but there are big issues with those.

I'm sure both the Zune owners will be well pissed off with that ;)

Hahaha, I thought that myself, I've never even seen a shop that sells them.

wasn't russell's original indignation re drm that he couldn't transfer his files between platforms?
I guess we can assume he's zune owner number one. bill gates may have the other. no downloaded episodes of greys anatomy for them.

and in other "copyright fights back" news,

zune is installing a feature that will block unauthorised copyrighted video material from that player.
apple is still refusing to co-operate with blocking copyright material for itunes, although I assume they could do just that.

In the not rolling over corner the MPAA won a court settlement of almost 111 million dollars against BitTorrent search engine site Torrent Spy.
The site recently closed down of their own free will but due to the legal pressure put on them, but that didn't stop them getting judgement against them to the tune of $30,000 for each of nearly 3700 disputed files listed on their site.

Torrent sites excuse of "we don't actually hold the pirate content, just a file which instructs your computer how to find it" and "We're no more guilty than the postal system is for carrying pirated dvds to customers" didn't wash with the judges.

ouch. or not. the site owners have filed for bankruptcy.

    Bit of a problem really.

maybe we need drug trainers, who manage a clients needs based on their target creativity, but I think we have those already, doctor and dealers I think they're called, neither of which have the patients creative productivity in mind though.

you're right, it is a problem

a few troubled souls take the latter path

a few is being a bit generous to your argument. I assume you're only accounting for the fatalities as being a casualty.

I'd count the incredible music and art that didn't make it to the real world through the bottomless void that can be drug preoccupation.

you don't have to die to have the life sucked out of you.

judgmental assumptions, about people recovering from addiction/alcoholism or any-other life threatening illness.

read that as partly evening the aren't drugs cool vibe of this thread, and partly anger at said burnouts who throw away their talent. you love these people but at the same time its hard not to be pissed off at them for fucking up their gift.

  • Hard News: Acid Man,

I just got through watching the joe strummer doco, so maybe my vision of it is a little tainted by his story.

His stance was drugs were for hippies (but apparently cigarettes and alcohol don't come into his definition of that), and as you know all hippies must die by punk ethos.

it then went on to show various members of the band falling by the wayside from drug abuse (same old story, its almost boring), as the music spiraled downward.

Strummer didn't come off to well in the doco though. regularly changing his identity and dropping his old friends in his search for stardom.

its hard to really know how much drugs played in the creativity we hear in a finished record. I've seen plenty of shit drug fueled efforts sculpted into master pieces by skilled producers and engineers,

potentially great performances rescued by the rest of the band covering for the twat who took p 10 mins before the gig started and couldn't tell when the songs started and stopped. sometimes you have to be on the inside to know what's really going on.
