And when you're over 50, it's even more sobering! One of my best recent experiences was at the Darkroom. I caught the Dance Asthmatics show, one of the best live gigs I've been to in many a long while. Never mind they didn't come on stage until 12.30am. Lots of friendly pushing shoving and bouncing about and enjoyed being among a good mix of ages - not a hint of self-consciousness, just loved it for what it was and the space I was in at the time.

BTW, Dance Asthmatics really have that 'something' - and are coming to Wellington and Auckland in March - get your Lifetime of Secretion Tour tickets and dates in your diaries now! Their busy drummer Brian is also in Brian Tamaki and the Kool Aid Kids and is/was in X-Ray Charles. Guitarist Joe is also in the Salad Boys.

Not the greatest of quality but here here's the wonderfully-titled Puking Ghost aka PG

I knew I'd seen it somewhere else too, well, a version of it, on the reverse of the Three Blind Mice released last year.

RIP a local and revered artist of a non-musical sort, Barry Brickell, famed for his pottery and the Driving Creek Railway has passed away aged...80. I went on the DCR once about 20 years ago and what a fabulous feat of engineering it is. I found this early story about Barry on NZ On Screen, a short film from 1970

Oh yes, there was many of those 'nights of chill blue' - the Gladstone and Star&Garter were also frequent targets.

Noting in Ian's clips Martyn (with a 'y') Bull on drums, I got nostalgic and dug out Doledrums which features Martin (with an 'i') Kean

I recall Martin Kean was also for a time in Stereolab. They played a show at a long gone cinema (name escapes me) with the Bats ca 1993. He's now a lecturer in Communication at Otago Polytech.

I also spotted this 'Funky Dunedin' from 1986.

Agree, no matter the artist or whether we really like them or not. Like the spelling Martin Phillipps (correct) vs.Martin Philipps and that printing fiasco for NZ Music Month last year. Fortunately Martin is still with us!

On the Chills and old footage, I recall the footage of their show with the Stones at that venue (Rhumba Bar?) in Victoria St W was reasonable, Flamethower was great, Rachel Phillipps on keys.

Out today, further David Bowie references, in the Press and elsewhere on line. Michele A'Court compares Bowie's and Alan Rickman's sexy teeth while Johnny Moore (who runs the fab Smash Palace in High St) ponders the Eagles' enduring popularity .

I think this has passed under the radar - check out the latest collaboration between Ruban and Kody Nielson, SB - 03, a 12 min slice of funk and groove and much else. Also listen to it here:

A great pity Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings can't make it south, yet again. However, in their absence, those of here will be served a delicious treat Saturday night at the Wunderbar in the form of the (surprisingly rare) pairing of Delaney Davidson and Aldous Harding.

Delaney as we know can bang out great versions of just about anything that takes his fancy, including Bowie. I recall seeing a cracking version of Starman a few years back at the Wine Cellar which he sung with Steve Abel.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Bowie, Original…,

My sister living in Tokyo spotted this thoughtful Bowie tribute Like some cat from Japan in the Japan Times.

There are stories told by five Western expats residing in Japan, each having had interacted with Bowie in one way or another during their careers. One of them is Morgan Fisher who played keys for Mott the Hoople.

Bowie loved Japan, toured there a few times and contemplated staying for longer periods but feared "I’ll get too Zen there and my writing will dry up.”

The last piece is the best I think, by one Roger Pulvers who was with Bowie in Auckland and Rarotonga to film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (where Bowie met Ryuichi Sakamoto for the first time). There’s also a hilarious OMG fan moment in Rarotonga - not quite what you’d expect!

The first writer BTW, Nick Currie, plays under the moniker Momus and has knocked out a few Bowie covers in his time including an ok version of Ashes to Ashes

Another writer, Giovanni Fazio plays as the artist Makyo – here’s a 2015 track I found, Mystic Fire -‘abstract ambient dub from Japan’ – via Goa. Some cool photography

Some reviews aren't that complimentary, e.g. this one: http://exclaim.ca/music/article/sacred_triangle_bowie_iggy_lou_1971-1973 None of the three are actually interviewed in it.
