In a similar vein (not sure if this has been mentioned yet), the Sacred Triangle of David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed. This is Part 1 of 4

What a fabulous find Russell! The Bowie web just keeps more complex and interesting.

Also new this week on Audioculture: The Terminals

Bring in guests, play country music, rai, acrobat, rocksteady and the records that well-known songs imitated or sampled.

I suggest this kind of feature such as The Pips in 'the inaugural edition of Summer Music 101's very own (and very serious) music awards' - on Boxing Day, hosted by the inimitable Anika Moa. Never laughed so hard all year! Did anyone catch it?

He's been out jamming with the Mick Jaggernauts...the lyrics are brilliant!

Who recalls this, Bowie's ode to the Chubby Little Loser (aka Ricky Gervais) in Extras

And more Ricky Gervais, talking about Bowie in 2008

  • Hard News: Bowie,

I didn't go to QE2 1978 concert but gosh I nearly forgot, my father was on a the flight returning to Chc from Sydney. My father was sat next to (this in the days before business class),one David Bowie. They got talking, dad having no idea whatsoever who he was (more a fan of Mario Lanza!) exchanged small talk which amounted to pretty well, 'I'm Patrick'...'I'm David'...'I design and sell paint brushes... and what do you do?' ...'Oh, I'm in the entertainment business'!

In the days also before airbridges, they exited together to huge applause, my father bedazzled by the yelling and cheering - until a hostess told him who Bowie was and who the applause was for!

BTW there was I think on this tour an interview between Andrew (Here's Andy - or Shazam?) Shaw and Bowie - Shaw was ripped to shreds if I recall. As of writing couldn't find the video.

I did find though on NZ on Screen this excerpt from a 1982 visit to film parts of Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence - interview on Radio with Pictures with Brent Hansen - http://www.nzonscreen.com/title/radio-with-pictures-1982

Not sure, they may have done. The Dead Kennedys who visited Australia in 1983 certainly did. Drummer DH Peligro was arrested after their Brisbane gig for 'public drinking', his can of beer reportedly unopened. East Bay Ray tried to intervene and was hustled away too. In the Sydney Morning Herald, Jello Biafra had this to say:

summing up Brisbane, all I can say is it was the closest thing to a heavy, heavy, junta-style police state I've ever been in

There's more on the tour in this which I came across on Rest Assured - includes a lengthy analysis by Jello himself on the then Oz music scene. Worth a look.

I wish him (John Wright) well but the road could be a tough one, as suggested in this Guardian article:

New elements can be named after a mythological concept, a mineral, a place or country, a property or a scientist

Quite what category Lemmy would fit in (!!)...anyhow in a more rigorous article in Chemistry World, Lemmy has better leverage:

discoverers do not have an automatic right to choose a name

So on that count, as he was spending far more time on stages and in studios than in laboratories, Lemmy getting the nod for Lemmium has as good a chance as any!

Oh, and for the hell of it, here's Tom Lehrer in his element...
