Re the online NZ Herald/Stuff National Party advertisements - is that normal? I recall seeing the NZ Herald one and I found it rather shocking (as did various foreign friends). I don't recall seeing such advertising before for political campaigns in NZ (but have for commercial services in the UK), but is this a normal thing in NZ, either online or offline.
It does rather seem like it should not be allowed this close to the election, although I'm less concerned with any party doing it earlier in the campaign for some reason.

I used to be strongly against compulsory voting for reasons outlined by other people here already but I more and more struggle to understand how we are meant to address the general, Western decline in voting turnout/participation.
Has any comparable country had such a problem recently and addressed / reversed the decline without recourse to compulsory voting?

If i recall correctly, the Wayback archive can have items removed, if someone is determined, although I'm sure helpful souls have taken copies of all the files there, just in case.

The vitriol Clark received and the way it was framed (sexual) really made me wonder about human nature and politics at the time.

Rather hard to write an article about the loss of strong state owned regional TV in Christchurch and how this is especially a loss during disasters without talking about the main tv channels being based in Auckland, Simon.
I imagine NZBC Auckland had a strong regional team back then as well though so I don't expect they were neglected in any way.

The Maori Party need to show some signs of independence I think, if just to remind their voters and potential coalition partners that they are still a force to be reckoned with. If they retain two seats this time around this may give them quite a solid bargaining position, especially given that their new leadership may want to strike their own path to distinguish them from the last two terms.
