  • Hard News: Dirty Politics,

I had a look at the Wheeler ebook site, but it seems to be some sort of public lending ebook service. However Amazon seems now to have an ebook version of the book for the Kindle.

Isn't sabotage / taking of electoral signs a regular occurrence? I certainly recall people at high school taking great delight in such and sharing their exploits. This was before cell phone cameras, luckily for them I guess.

All I can remember from this was that Winston Peters used wooden signs at the time.

So what other incidents have been encountered, on the public stage, this election campaign? I'm not in country at present so perhaps have missed finer detail. I haven't noticed at least any reports of cemetery desecration like which has happened in years passed, which is a small mercy.

This is rather interesting, about Rangitata at least. Growing up as I did a little to the south of this electorate, in a National household, Timaru certainly and to a lesser extent, Oamaru, were always in the Labour Party camp. Not necessarily by electorate, although Labour did win Waitaki/Oamaru and Timaru consistently when it was possible.

Looking at the 2008/2011 results, Labour seems capable of getting about a bit over a third of the vote in that electorate at present.

  • Hard News: The silence of the public square,

It almost seems that one should in part choose residence based on electorate. Choose a safe seat based on affiliation or a marginal if undecided. Otherwise just feel a bit angry twice a decade

Speaking of which, are any of the parties doing London meetings this election campaign? I saw the Greens were out at a NZ Society organised drinks at the Black Lion a couple of weeks ago, but I've not come across anything else so far.

They gave out a lot of stickers, which seemed to please everyone. Message seems to be that stickers encourage engagement.

Right, but that is true for all of New Zealand. The country has been designed deliberately to be highly centralised on the national government. I don't think it problematic then for the government to not want to abrogate too much power in that scenario.

That being said, I think there is a lot to be said for creating strong regional authorities, perhaps loosely based on the old provincial model, for all of New Zealand.

Well am I wrong in understanding RNZ is principally run of Wellington? Or is this some wider comment about quality?
