Almost all posters have dangled a few of their own pop-references/in-jokes/group-talk/jargon just to see if people "get" them. Don't we all feel "oh so clever" that we are "in the know". ;-^
What hasn't been mentioned so far is the that the dark side of this practice is all about exclusion. if you don't pick up the reference then you aren't a member of the gang. Robyn G. gets close to it with her post about a high school radio catchphrase.
How do you pronounce "shibboleth"? Remember, the original use of that was literally life-or-death.From now on whenever anyone drops one of those "in-crowd" references into a post I shall comment "That Is Just F*cked Up" which I will abbreviate to TIJFU (pronounce "tidge-foo" - like kung fu) so that we all know what I mean.
This should in fact cause a circular logic singularity which will suck the whole Internet into a localised black-hole and we can all be ejected back into the real world.

...with a few provisos..

Kapa haka competitions? Dance offs? People competing to be more artistic than each other, while retaining technical skill.
Dancing with the Stars...? Neither art nor sport. Merely spectacle.
I only stated that sports/games as we understand them are not art. If you partake in artistic activities for competitive purposes, you are no longer creating art but are in fact playing games.
All strictly my opinion, of course.
Now ask me my opinion on "What is art?". I basically agree with Scot Macleod's definition but with few provisos. Under his definition, getting completely trolleyed is art. There are probably arguments for that from Dunedin scarfies...
But that's a whole different thread...

The definition of sport needs some clarification. Originally sports were manly activities outside the scope of fighting wars and raising crops. Grouse shooting, salmon fishing, tiger hunting etc. "What Ho! Good shot old chap!!"
What we call sports are actually activities the sporting crowd would refer to as games.
Games have the purpose of determining winners and losers (preferably without too many fatalities). That is what separates it from art. There may be awards won for art, but that is not (usually) the purpose for which the activity was undertaken.
To me, sports/games cannot be art because they involve direct competition.

Sam Morgan was out in the open on the office floor, alongside the call centre. He did admit to me it made some of the sale negotiations a bit tricky
Two words: Cellphone, Carpark
That's how I roll..
Ok on sunny days but wet winters are a bitch.

I've always thought Andrew Mehrtens wouldn't make a bad commentator
Hmmmm... I remember Mehrts (with Justin Marshall) doing a segment for "The Golf Show" a few years back. He always seemed to be trying too hard to be that "funny guy" that we all heard he was. They appeared to be trying to imitate Ellis and Ridge's TV style.
Maybe he would be different when commentating on rugger...

Back in the good old days when I was on the Uni of Waikato Karate team, I had an experience which was 1" punch like...
I was in a points sparring tournament and my opponent came in too close with an attempt at a low punching attack.
It was really weird. I remember seeing it all happen in slow motion and having time to think "he's left his face completely unguarded... I suppose I better hit him then". As I had my left hand up in guard position, I just jabbed it a few inches to his face with what I thought was a pretty feeble attempt, but I did have a good stable stance and the jab landed on his face. His head snapped back, he went wobbly at the knees and nearly fell out of the ring. The judge gave me the "ippon" (full point) call and the people watching applauded. I had no idea how it had turned out so effective. Just one of those "Zen" moments.
However, that was all my Zen ration used up and the guy broke my nose in the next engagement. I still can't sing properly to this day...
Maybe that's a kharma thing. -
OTOH can you imagine the outcry from football fans if TVNZ had decided not to cover the football against FSCKING BRAZIL, BABY!
Especially if it HAD been an exciting match...
The fact that most kiwi football fans would have switched off and gone to bed after watching the Brazilians having a bit of a lazy-sunday-kick-around is beside the point.
TVNZ are damned no matter who they try to please...

I love weddings... especially when I'm not paying the bill.
Most of the weddings have been non-religious (except for one catholic marathon - which I exited early due to a nasty tummy-bug from the night before) or presided over by a groovy-vicar-type (you know... "give thanks in whatever way you find appropriate" kind of guy)
I've been to too many funerals lately and am desperately holding out for a more cheerful family gathering. I've basically run out of friends and family of my generation and it will probably be years until the first run of nieces and nephews and children of close friends hit the right age (whatever that might be).
Being an amateur video nerd, I have "worked" virtually 100% of the weddings I have been to in the last 10 years. Yes, yes, I do know its mainly because I work for friends and family with no charge.
Weddiings are fun when you know the happy couple are actually a happy couple. When the relationship between the bride and groom is a bit dodgy... well....they are even more fun!!!

Technically (i.e. pedantically) speaking, it's not actually a jet pack or a rocket pack (not having jets or rockets in it)
Even more pedantically speaking, it is actually "Jet" propelled. The fact that the jet of air that lifts it is produced by ducted fans driven from a reciprocating internal combustion engine is beside the point. However, I do admit that in modern parlance "Jet" and "Gas Turbine" have become synonymous...
