Came across an interesting mix this week based on tracks which sample Lyn Collin’s classic song ‘Think’. I say interesting because of the diversity of artists and genres represented, from Sade to Nightmares on Wax to Jamie XX and Squarepusher. no doubt a bunch of hip hop cuts have been left out, D/L button too.

Struggle to come up with a list as its been a reasonably big year on the vinyl front: a steady trickling from local shops and record fairs, an extremely good year for op shop pickups (best ever I’d say) and a trip to Japan (which resulted in 61 albums being carted back home). Suffice to say the digital side of things has been impacted, with (somewhat curiously) less downloads than before.
A few special mentions ..
Fabreeze Brothers: Fast rap and banging sample-based beats project of Phil the Soulman and Paul Nice. Peep ‘Fashion plate’ for a tasty Galt McDermott rerub and ‘The Sure Shot!’

The title track ‘That Rongeng Sound’ is the standout:

Surprisingly fuzz infused, enjoy

A bit tangential to the above, but loosely related to the serato coverage of recent weeks … the ‘playlist retreat’ video went up overnight and looks to be an interesting watch ... my embedding skills seem a bit rubbish but here goes ...
And have been enjoying this Mr Thing mix, which by the sounds of the Jackson 5 therein flosses some of serato’s capabilites ..

Great opening lines Russell, simply add that DJ'ing can be a thankless task in this day & age when everyone is keen to slip on a track via their device (and sadly all too often, youtube, with advert first ... sigh)
I'm reminded of a good quote re: Serato which was along the lines of "It doesn't make a bad DJ good, but can make a good DJ better" I think its a DJ Day observation, and one I agree with
Haven't gone digital myself, so you'll find me in the corner happily content with a bag (or thoughts) of black wax :)

Over here in Melbourne the RSD phenomenon is seemingly getting bigger every year. I’ll be heading along to Northside Records which will be featuring a performance by Paul Kelly among others, which is a ‘nice’ parallel of sorts to Neil Finn performing at Slow Boat given the respective mana / history of each within their local scenes.
Anecdotally, RSD seems to be even bigger in the UK & US with many stores experiencing huge queues & frequently selling out quickly of those various RSD releases .. no doubt reports will surface on twitter, instagram and music forums
And good stuff re: the beatboxer plug – will check it out later tonight, I went to school with Benny G (same year) many moons ago

Looking pretty dry in those pictures! Must be the epic summer youse are having. That aside, great to see more bike infrastructure going in.

As above, great images - immediately feel compelled to make more use of my camera, as opposed to the ol phone .... a wonderful medium

A minute or two late, but tuned into KEXP last night and then switched stations to Laid Back Radio (already a preset fav) and alas identical feeds!
