So, like, I'm not just making this up.

gosh, I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for James to come back with his withering demolition of all this, since, y'know, he's actually there and all...

Oh good! You're okay. I was a bit worried about you, following the news this week.

Yep, but it was the biggest shake I've felt. We were on the 2nd floor of our office and quickly scarpered outside, carefully avoiding the normal advice to stand under a door frame, knowing just how well things are usually built here

    But thank you, Jackie.

and if that makes me sound like i'm invested in American health care in the same fashion as i might be invested in, for instance, the Darfur Conflict, then i'll have to plead guilty there...

But for all that, I've yet to see a thread here, or anywhere in the US, on the half a million or so who lost their homes, with little chance of a new one, or much else in the foreseeable future, in last week's earthquake in Java.

We're selective in the pain we share.

Obama could take a significant step in fixing USA health care, and get the US out of two major shitholes in the Middle East. I'll take an interest in all three of those.

Agreed but the later two hold rather more interest for me, and I'm not thoroughly convinced that Obama's currency, or energy, is spent if he stumbles on health.

  • Hard News: Screen Wars,

are pirating it in very large numbers

Yeah, in the emporiums here about the time if was in the theatres. And in good quality, I'm told. But that's not unusual, and neither is it unusual to see them on the shelves before cinema release.

As I said here, it bemuses me why the fuss about the torrents when tourists leave here daily with vast numbers of HQ pirated DVDs and the industry seems to care little.

  • Hard News: Detritus,

Yeah, unlikely to happen soon, Sacha. I think James and Jason may be ok with it but Paddy would likely veto it. I may mention it though next time I see him whenever that may be. A digital release only though inevitably.

    Stranger things have happened.

  • Hard News: Detritus,

    And Mesh were totally Orsome

Yep, agreed. I came within a whisker of releasing a Mesh album at the time (Paddy left to do Pitch Black so it didn't happen). I found the 10 tracks they recorded for it in a box a few weeks back, and they sound as good 12 years later as they did at the time. Such a bloody shame that one..

  • Hard News: Detritus,

And I'm enjoying this one half the respondents think Obama attempting to indoctrinate children with socialism with his upcoming back-to-school speech.

And the comments are rather excellent too. I get a weird sense of amusement out of this stuff. Yes, odd, I know.

  • Hard News: Detritus,

    They "fixed" that. Twice.

I own that second version on VHS (although I'm not sure if it still works as I've not owned a VHS player for most of a decade now). It kinda works and the extra footage is mostly very good, clearly being sliced out originally because Gf II was bloody long already and something clearly had to go to keep Paramount happy.

I watched I & II again this week with my 14 year old, at her request (she wanted to see the movie before she played the game on her Wii, and is now somewhat obsessed, so it's III tonight, and I've had to tell her to stop sketching horses' heads) and, although my memories of the films as being visually stunning at the time of release, were dampened somewhat, I think I'll stick to the original sequence.

Forget forum trolling, if you want GF II embarrassing, I think this may be it

  • Random Play: Let me take you down . . .,

Because what you want from McCartney is great songs

I think that he signalled that it wasn't always going to be that way from now on when he released his first solo album.

I've always thought that the critical savaging of Wildlife was one of the reason he retreated to so much flimsy dross in the years afterwards. It wasn't until the late eighties, and even more so in the 1990s that he found his muse again in any meaningful way.

I gotta put my hand up too for the unreleased McCartney / Costello sessions (much bootleged naturally). The duet of So Like Candy kills the released version (on Costello's Mighty Like A Rose) and sends shivers. Why in god's name is this still sitting in the vaults.
