  • Hard News: Anatomy of a Shambles,

Petra, you appear to have missed my point.

    They were not anti-union rallies

Indeed not. I would have worded that better if I'd had more than two minutes to write the post.

But they were marching at least in part as a direct reaction to union actions.

The countries that rate highest highest on "happiness" and "prosperity" and "great places to live" ranking thingies, are those that have a good, balanced mix of socialism and capitalism. Now why is that, I wonder

Thankyou for the Mansplain. I find nothing there to disagree with.

I am proud to call myself a "weak, soft socialist". But then I'm not a screaming left/right ideologue; one eyed and bitter. I'd like to think I'm more pragmatic than that. Besides, hardline ideologues tend to be too authoritarian for my tastes.

You seem to be implying that I am a one-eyed bitter idealogue. Would you care to explain to me why?

  • Hard News: Anatomy of a Shambles,

    So let's recap.

    The union has:

    - managed to make Jon '90 days' Key look like a hero for saving the hobbit.

    - Caused anti-union demos on Labour Day.

    - given the government an excuse to weaken our labour laws under urgency.

    - is giving lots of tax money to the studio at a time the country can least afford it.

Thats a great job, guys. Out. Fucking. Standing.

Wil you be celebrating with a few good old working class beers tonight? None of that champagne for you. No. That's for weak soft socialists like Russell Brown.

What's that buzzing I hear? Oh yeah, it's Michael Joseph Savage spinniing in his grave.

If anyone needs me, I'll be up at his memorial with a bottle of scotch, screaming at the wind.

Until they see how incredibly Middle-Earth like the UK is, it having been the actual place Tolkien wandered around in when he was dreaming it all up.

    Oh, what's this?

  • Up Front: Oh, Cock!,

a mean human penis is approximately 12.9–15 cm (5.1–5.9 in) in length.

Does it say how long the kind ones are?

do women sit around having good discussions about their fannies much?

Well, they do expect you to come to the theatre so they can talk at you for hours about theirs.

Whereas men just get all silly about it.

  • Hard News: Joining the conversation,

Personally I can't imagine choosing a partner whose political views were completely opposed to mine.

Oh, so drably utilitarian. You need to unleash your feelings! Go with your instincts! Let L'amore be your guide!

Anyway, when a man marries a woman, isn't it implicit that everythings going to be completely opposed?

  • Hard News: You don't know what you've…,

One group of young women hit upon the idea of re-purposing the tape inside tapes. You know, the old fashioned things that we played in tape recorders. Before CD's came along.

A squeamishness I find rather ironic as...the BBC are finding out that not letting their archives rot away isn't only cultural corporate responsibility, but good business.

Slightly off-topic, but I suspect there are still quite a few Whovians who wince in pain whenever the forever lost first seasons are mentioned.

  • OnPoint: On Freedom of Speech,

WRT the use of the F-bomb and the C-bomb, isn't what they are referring to secondary to how they feel to say/scream/yell.

They're good, sharp, short, percussive words, with good hard consonants in them at the right place, like most good swearwords are. To a certain extent, what they refer to is incidental to their, um, 'mouth-feel', as it were.
