  • Hard News: Judge Harvey: My part in his downfall, in reply to Sacha,

The judge had noted that at present it was legal for citizens in New Zealand to hack DVD region codes to watch disks designed to be restricted to other countries, adding that TPP would change this.

DVDs are just so yesterday. I wonder what the TPP says about Carrier pigeons?.
One of the biggest problems in writing law applying to technology is that by the time the dust settles and the law is enacted the technology has moved on.

  • Hard News: It's not funny because it's…,

    From Sofie's Brownlee link,,,

"We probably buy a lot of nails as well, you buy a lot of things," Brownlee said. .

So, he bites his nail too?.

Earlier this week, Fletcher Building's chief executive Jonathan Ling denied claims from the Council of Trade Unions that it's profiting from cutting rates for painters and plasterers by about 20 per cent to $19 a square meter.

New Zealand's largest construction company said it is simply a matter of supply and demand, with the supply of people greater than the amount of work, while CTU president Helen Kelly has labeled it "an abuse of contracted labour."

More greed, more workers than work in Christchurch my arse.

    Dotcom judge quits the case

Judge David Harvey surrendered his role in the case after making comments during a copyright discussion at an internet conference.

I don't like the look of this, I can't see Judge Harvey waking up in the morning and saying "I shouldn't have said that, I will stand down"
Considering he was considered the right gut for the job...

An internet law expert, Judge Harvey had been considered the perfect choice to hear arguments on whether Dotcom and his Megaupload colleagues should be extradited by the United States

Did he jump or was he pushed?.

  • Hard News: It's not funny because it's…, in reply to Emma Hart,

can I politely ask that you shut up now?

No. Your level of comprehension is sadly lacking if you consider asking someone to "shut up" to be polite.
Greed may have been touted as being good in the Eighties but I doubt if I am alone in thinking that time has proven that the opposite holds true.
    As I said...

If one eats so much that one becomes overweight it could be suggested that one is greedy.

Well you could, this does not imply cause and effect, they are not mutually exclusive.
The fact that, as I write, Parliament is discussing an SOP with regard to punishing DPB recipients for receiving more than they are "Allowed" when they are obviously in need while the likes of Jenny Shipley are receiving in excess of $2000 a day for pontificating over matters over which they have little direct knowledge.
$2000 a day from the same public purse because of need or greed?. I would plumb for the latter.

Presumably it's bad form to draw attention to the fact that he's also morbidly obese.

His size has nothing to do with his personality or ability to do his job, such as they are.

If one eats so much that one becomes overweight it could be suggested that one is greedy. Greed is a personality trait, a trait common amongst the right wing muppets we have lording it over us at this point in time.

  • Hard News: It's not funny because it's…, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

Brownlee isn't the first to treat it like open mic night at a third rate comedy club

Our "Esteemed Prime Minister" also enjoys this disgraceful abuse of Parliament. I have said it before and I will continue to pronounce that this, so called Government, is acting more and more like an opposition, who are they opposing? all of us that's who.

  • Hard News: The Music for Occasions, in reply to Jackie Clark,

I will be carried in to this:

Oh Jackie, I hope you never die. I couldn't stand the thought of having to sit through that selection.
    ;-)

  • Hard News: The Music for Occasions, in reply to James Butler,

That’s one advantage to a live-music funeral that I hadn’t thought of. At least then even if you do end up paying, you’re paying musicians.

It's really not about the paying, it's the concept of "Ownership" I have a problem with. All Music is derivative but a performance stands alone, even if you record a performance you are not forcing the musicians to perform again without payment and now that the cost of recording is, virtually, nothing, I see no excuse for profiteering, especially in the case of funerals.

  • Hard News: The Music for Occasions,

In the UK at both my Brothers and my Mothers funerals, a week apart FFS, we had to request and source the music through the Funeral Directors, copyright law don't cha know, so the selection was limited. This just added to the sadness and anger.
Still, nice to know someone was making money out of it all.
    NOT.
We will break the law this weekend and sing "Happy Birthday" to Russ without paying royalties.

  • Hard News: #JohnDotBanks and all,

Whilst we are on a subject (I know, a totally different one but...)
    From today's Herald
Govt will not force any local councils to merge - PM

The proposed law changes reduced the barriers to council mergers.

If an amalgamation of councils was proposed, a majority of the total affected residents would have to vote in support of the merger for it go ahead.

At present, a majority must be found in every separate district affected by an amalgamation.

To force a vote of opposition against a merger, 10 percent of affected residents would have to form a petition.

Does this mean the amalgamation of Auckland Councils was illegal?.
