  • Hard News: The First Draft,

On Friday I listened to Bob Parker's afternoon media briefing and was heartened to hear him introduce NZSL interpreter Jeremy, who would be providing sign language for the Deaf who were watching. Nice one, I thought.

When I got home, my wife (who is an NZSL interpreter) gave me the gist of what it took to get an interpreter onscreen. Apparently, Deaf Aoteroa had been working through government channels, to no avail. The result was Deaf with no idea of what information was being imparted at the media briefings.

Exasperated, a Deaf woman facebooked Mayor Bob asking why couldn't they organise something. He personally facebooked her back saying he would make it a priorty. And he did, too.

And now Jeremy has his own Facebook fan-page.

Really, I'm sorry if this comes across as a tad bitchy but feeding the media copy is NOT anyone's prime obligation

Tadness, as ever, eloquently achieved :) IMO, fronting to the media is actually part of the mayor's job description, but obviously its a matter of degree, which is probably where we disagree.

  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

I don't think Mary Wilson was being too harsh, I think it was more that she wanted the answers. After all, Bob Parker wanted the role of "emergency go to guy" when he stood for mayor, and it's only reasonable that he provides some detail now and then. I thought he handled it well, and I got a better understanding of the no-chance-for-error identification process as a result.

If you like RPGs, you can donate to the Red Cross and download a bunch of RPGs (plus a couple of larps) in one go. My understanding is that the game publishers have provided free games and that the money (USD20.00) goes straight to the NZRC.

  • Hard News: Welfare: Back to the Future?,

As usual, Gordon Campbell delivers an excellent analysis of the report.

Given the likely economic impact of the earthquake (especially to the local economy), and presuming the Key government continues it's hands-in-the-pockets-and-shrug approach to implementing policies that might improve economic growth, I foresee any attempt to follow the WWG recommendations as a mechanism to immediately revictimise the working-age residents of Christchurch. Hopefully, this means it is doomed.

I disagree, George, I think I had a valid criticism of the media. As Simon points out, I was probably wrong in my conclusion (although I swear it looked like every other cheap composite I've ever seen). I have whanau down there, not all who are accounted for (and friends for that matter, too).

We view this dire situation through the lenses of various media, and I do not think it inappropriate to question the balance, timbre, or focus of those lenses.

The lighting of JK (studio fake) vs the background (ambient cloudy, different time of day), plus that glowy edging around him that indicates superimposition. That, and my daughter spotted it first (and ya gotta trust Gen Z - they totally grok media cynicism).

Got an update from the inlaws in Lyttleton. Apparently the crew of HMS Canterbury were totally heroic, basically downed tools and got into rescue mode as soon as the quake hit.

Reports are that 60% of the main road (London St) is destroyed, its so sad.

<snark>Did anyone catch John Key's live cross on One about 20 minutes ago ? They totally green-screened him into a street in the CBD with rescue operations playing behind him. Playing a montage behind him is fine, but why pretend that he's somewhere he isn't ?

NB: Not blaming JK at all, just disappointed at TV1. Then again, my response was "why are we watching One ?" - there's a reason I prefer 3.</snark>

    From the Herald article:

That payment would be administered by a single Crown Agency - Employment and Support New Zealand - standing at "arms length" from the Government.

So...the big plan is to eventually privatise social welfare ? Why else would a core government function be moved to an "arms length" entity ?
