  • Hard News: Standards Matter,

Thanks for this Tim, and for loving teaching in spite of everything.

    Hear hear.

  • Hard News: Standards Matter,

I note with amusement that the Middleton Grange School for Bigotry and Religious Intolerance is situated at 50 Acacia Avenue, only a few doors down from Charlotte the Harlot:

  • Cracker: Go Figure,

Caprica: on the basis of the pilot and first episode, it is on track to be much more than just a prequel to Battlestar Galactica.

    Seconded. I likesies..

  • Cracker: Go Figure,

I like shocking. I liked Rome . Who does Parker play?

    Claudius Glaber.

I hadn't noticed his voice - when fast forwarding there's no audio. But it's a nice voice, I can see (hear?) why they use it.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I don't think its an unpleasant voice. I just can't see the logic in having the guy who's selling me National Bank also selling me a number of other things.

  • Cracker: Go Figure,

So kinda like Rome, but with more sex and less historical accuracy?

More or less, yeah. Not sure how much historical accuracy they are actually aiming for though. But the violence is utterly depraved, pornographic, cartoon-ish gore with all sorts of amazing post-production effects, and Carrie-like volumes of fake blood. (I even noticed blood-splash on the camera lens at one point.) No idea if this is taking things to another level or simply the state of the art, but I've never seen anything like it (although I don't really watch films like 300, so...)

By the way, my intention is not to convey disapproval -- personally I could care less. It's just all a bit.. shocking :))

  • Cracker: Go Figure,

Really? Then how come the ads themselves are mostly so, so naff.

Anyone else ever noticed that all of the REALLY TERRIBLE NAFF ones are Australian?

Anyone else ever noticed that Craig Parker voices between three to five different commercials at any time? Why an ad agency would do that (hire a voice actor who is currently all over current campaigns) is beyond me -- unless they think that no one would notice, or else no one would care. Either way I'm so sick of his voice, I'm hoping that his appearance in a lead role in the new series Spartacus will reduce his attractiveness to ad-makers somewhat.

Spartacus is a spectacularly gory new show about gladiators in ancient Rome. It's produced by Mr. Lucy Lawless Rob Tappert, and features much nudity, much sex*, and much stomach-churning ultra-violence. Having seen two episodes I can report that it comes across like a bizarre three-way between Caligula, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and gay porn.

    * including some featuring a mostly naked Lucy Lawless. BSG/Xena fans, are you taking note? ;)

  • Cracker: Of Racks and Ratings,

    Awesome Pip. That's great.

Ha ha ha so I wasn't the only one thinking "Wow. Own goal of the year, right there" then...

Don't get into the comments though.

Too late... and that's quite some story from Past Neighbour, eh. Can't quite believe it myself...

  • Radiation: Big bang theory,

Triffids? they are supposed to have THREE legs FFS not some tangled mass of Art Department foam rubber tentacles.

Snortle. Indeed. The 1981 triffids were beautiful, malevolent, vicious, giant-tropical orchid looking things. These new ones are just super-awful. When they were tottering about the place I kept hearing a voice in my head saying "Brains.... Brains.... Brains.... Brains.... "
