  • Hard News: The Disingenuous Press,

Now, you can say (yet again) the media were more interested in getting a sin-sational scoop right now, than getting the more modest but genuinely newsworthy story right.

Ah yes, "the media". That monolithic, Borg-like entity. You know what, Craig: some papers cover local politics fairly thoroughly and some don't; some go for "sin-sational" scoops and some don't. I'm getting a bit tired of this unwavering media-bashing rhetoric. It's much like saying "the blogosphere" without distinguishing between, say, Kiwiblog and Public Address. A distinction I know you like to make.

  • Hard News: Costly indeed,

Actually, isn't it possible that the "red-blooded" Shane Jones is just the kind of character Labour needs to win back Chris Trotter's famous "Waitakere Man" ...

The voter escorting National to its First Term Ball turned out to be the sort of bloke who spends Saturday afternoon knocking-back a few beers on the deck he’d built himself, and Saturday evening watching footy with his mates on the massive flat-screen plasma-TV he’s still paying-off.

    ...

National’s partner – let’s call him Waitakere Man – has a trade certificate that earns him much more than most university degrees. He’s nothing but contempt for "smart-arse intellectual bastards spouting politically-correct bullshit". What he owns, he’s earned – and means to keep.

  • Cracker: A Whale of a Tale,

Philip - fire away matey. bit late but, the gear's already locked and loaded.

I'll see you there. as a private contractor and given my entry obviously got lost in the post, I'll be hanging out by the sound desk out the back.

    should be good...local boys.

Kidding about the request but whatever you do should be miles better than the Abba/Doobie Bros covers bands they usually manage to dredge up.

  • Cracker: A Whale of a Tale,

sorry for the threadjack - I've steered well clear of this one - but any of you other bastardly talentless hacks going to qantas tonight?

cos as an extra special treat, me, Scott Kara and Liam Dann are your designated music providers for the evening. for free and everything.

not that it really matters. once the final gong's been dished everyone will bugger off to the pub anyway...splitters.

I'll be there. Can I start making requests now?

  • Cracker: A Whale of a Tale,

Which you get on Media 7

You do, and you also get Guyon Espiner on Q and A. But both are more narrowly focused shows than the Hill, Fraser etc ones were.

  • Cracker: A Whale of a Tale,

My criticism is not aimed at the reporters. But just to be clear, are you saying that if TVNZ decided not to pay its anchors a sesquillion dollars and aim its bulletins at twelve year olds, and started to produce something closer to RNZ news and commentary but with pictures, it would be eaten alive by TV3 and produce a loss?

There's something a little closer to that model -- which sounds like TVNZ, pre-deregulation -- in their 8pm bulletin if you have Freeview. A single newsreader who presents like a grown-up, less bells and whistles. For me, the glaring omission is the long-form, one-on-one interview that has been practised on TVNZ by the likes of Kim Hill, Ian Fraser and Brian Edwards historically.

  • Field Theory: Settle a bet,

My kids can quote Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Ice Age (1 & 2), Up, and sing most songs from tweenie TV shows.

It's interesting, that -- these kids' movies, and Shrek's a really good example, are written as quotable comic dialogue, much more so than Disney movies from the 30s to the 90s were. The influence of sitcoms and the wise-cracking 80s/90 action movie.

Also, I imagine there are people quoting dialogue from the likes of Superbad, Knocked Up, The Hangover.
