How do we respond? One thing that sticks out is the role of facebook and twitter. It's probably naive to expect them to police their own users - for bot accounts, or fake news. Yet they are virtual monopolies with great power. That's not a comfortable situation.

Dirty Politics, Panama papers, various scandals around political contributions have failed to move the 'perception'?
These rankings invite complacency and self-congratulation. We have little reason to be complacent.

being able to speak and present your ideas engagingly is vital.

And the Simon Wilson prescription for content is bloody good too. Hope someone in Labour is reading it ...

Obviously there are good spots at the Vector and not-so-good.

Really enjoyed the concert, but it's a stink music venue, imo. Horncastle in chch is the same - designed for netball/basketball, and good venues for big games.

  • Capture: With My Voice,

Great pics - thanks! We were seated (a million miles away) so good to see some of the up-close images. Almost took a camera, but thought it might get 'removed' - is it open slather these days?!

  • Hard News: The fake news problem, in reply to Tom Semmens,

a very human revelation that cuts right across the constant narrative that Trumpistan is chock full of heavily armed hyper-patriotic hillbillys.

    What is the truth, again?

The truth seems to be that Trump is seriously considering John Bolton as Secretary of State. Or Guiliani.
Both played significant roles in lies, obfuscation and attacks on international institutions in the lead-up to the 2003 Iraq war.
Something the 'war-weary' druid might want to consider.

Didnt realise 2/3 of the states were so close. Still reckon it's unlikely but who knows - a hugely popular president trump and a booming economy?

  • Hard News: The fake news problem,

    Thanks DH.
Also worth noting: when the article starts and goes on with crude name calling, it's not likely to be reliable.
The argument that senators and the electoral college are there to protect the rights of individual states is quite true. That was the rationale. It's also fairly obvious its not very democratic - if you believe a key democraric principle is the vote of every eligible adult being more or less equal.
The constitution was written for very different times. It's a sign of America's weakness and decline that now it is close to impossible to change it.
Pres Trump might have a go at the first amendment but only because he doesn't get this yet.
