Craig, I understand this is a hideous start to the week for you, and I wouldn’t contribute to PA if I wasn’t thought-provoked and disagreed with. How about about we call a truce and discuss rather than snark?

Fair call - but you know what? There's going to be plenty of political fall out for the Minister. There should be, and it goes with the ministerial warrant, so Paula Bennett is going to have to suck it up and deal.

But I'm a damn sight more angry at the people who directly failed in what should be an absolutely fundamental duty of care to people in the same position today as Emma and her Mum. To people like my foster brother and his wife, who are currently in the middle of adopting -- an incredibly tough process on all parties without wondering if some cyber-perv had their details on a USB stick.

Plenty of lashing to go around, but I've got to admit calling for Paula Bennett's resignation? Not top of my to-do list at the moment.

This doesn’t make John Key’s statements true, however. It would have been easy for someone interested in accessing the private data.

Well, yes… thought I’d made that distinction clearly but apparently not.

…. who have children hidden from them in CYFS care, and have just been given enough information to find them.

And that’s the one thing that makes me really fucking cross. Just getting out of an abusive relationship is hard enough when you've been programmed into believing if you leave nobody and NOTHING will ever keep you safe. So, totes awesome MSD – how many people already trying to drag themselves out of HELL have had what little confidence and trust they possess smashed because you fucks couldn’t be arsed doing your jobs?

Please trust those here who do actually know what we’re talking about –

I do, but the patronising head pat was neither helpful nor called for. Please share expertise, but it really helps to keep in mind that what’s obvious or “easy” for you might not be for everyone in the room.

Oh yes you could… that’s what Keith shows. It wasn’t hard at all, and for Key to say otherwise is just silly.

Could you do Deborah and I the courtesy of presuming 1) we can accurately access the limits of our own (in)competence, and, 2) that not everyone in the PAS community shares the knowledge and skill-sets of others around here who make a living off knowing shit about gadgets?

I know the default setting around here is that Key is a mendacious fuck-wit who can’t lie straight in bed, but sorry… as I said, I don’t think he’s wrong on that but manages to totally miss the point. I don't want my personal information to be hard to get to; I want it to be impossible to access for anyone who doesn't have a clearly defined and limited legitimate interest in doing do.

I’m certain the codemonkeys at the bottom of the pay scale will get fired.

Yeah, and Paula Bennett's head on a spike would totally restore my confidence. It really really would.

  • OnPoint: MSD's Leaky Servers, in reply to Daniel Webster,

Key’s already heavily downplaying it saying on Breakfast this morning that “accessing the information wasn’t easy”.

Well, he’s not wrong but completely misses the point. I couldn’t do what Keith did – but the point is that nobody should be able to. A non-trivial point I’m sure Mr. Key would heartily concur with if someone without a legitimate interest in doing so accessed his tax records (which I assume are sitting on an IRD server somewhere).

It’s not entirely unfair, Craig. it really is this serious. Without hyperbole, it’s about as serious a systems failure as can happen.

I do understand that, considering I may just have some quite involved medical records that were passed over to WINZ (perfectly legitimately) back in the day, I might as post here. I’d just like to see some accountabilities called for from, you know, people who are a little more directly responsible for data security.

Well done Keith for outing this. Absolutely fucking appalling mismanagement. Bennett must resign.

Funny that’s your go-to response, rather than sacking the people who as far as I understand have had a heads-up on this before and did sweet Fanny Adams.
