  • Field Theory: Man Moments,

And I know everyone’s going to get defensive of their position now. So go on, unleash the intellectual vitriol. I’ll check back in after a few days.

Nah, I think watching this is a more agreeable use of my time. FFS, this guy can shoot a n ad campaign for a supermarket chain with more genuine erotic heat than these Moa numpties could ever conceive… ( WARNING: CONTAINS FULL FRONTAL NUDITY AND IMAGERY SOME MAY FIND OFFENSIVE )

  • Up Front: Moa: Sub-Standard,

No, here’s my problem. I really, really don’t like it when vanilla advertising co-opts imagery from BDSM.

No - if you're going to do diet Helmut Newton you're probably going to miss everything that made the guy's work interesting in the first place: The total lack of any filter between his sexual obsessions and his work; how genuinely transgressive it was in the 60's & 70's to see that kind of imagery in commercial advertising and fashion editorial. The very specific personal and cultural context he came out of. That he really didn't give a flying fuck if anyone thought he could only be aroused by a shaved cross-dressing fraulein snarling at his crotch.

  • Hard News: Irony Deficient,

I'm just going to post a link to this, with no further comment beyond #LOLSOB

Copyright changes proposed by a member of the Green Party could destroy jobs and is "piss-taking" business, says Labour's Shane Jones.

It is the latest swipe Jones has taken at the Greens after MP Gareth Hughes voiced support for a Greenpeace spoof of a Sealord television advertisement.

The mock advert - released online - was dubbed over a Sealord television commercial and criticised what Greenpeace believed were harmful fishing practices.

Jones, a former Sealord chairman, called it a step too far, and likened it to economic vandalism at a time when jobs were scarce.

Not content to let the issue die, Jones has now taken aim at changes to copyright law tabled by Hughes, calling them a vehicle for the "Green agenda" to continue "piss-taking" business.

  • Field Theory: Man Moments, in reply to Hadyn Green,

you have to think that the ads are designed for men who have no idea what their partners want but want to buy a nice gift.

Or a hitherto unsuspected lesbian/bi niche in the scented candle market. Or something. Damn, I've passed through "what were you thinking" to "are you capable of thinking at all" with this lot.

  • Field Theory: Man Moments, in reply to Tristan,

Oh Christ now we are upset that a beer company goes after the male market instead of female ?

Nah, I'm actually upset that it does so in such a fucked-up, demeaning and really bizarre kind of way. I have a cock, and used to drink quite a lot. Not beer, but as much from the top shelf as I could afford. Still don't feel particularly "aspirational" about turning a woman into a living ashtray stand.

Oh, and if I was launching an IPO I wouldn't try quite so hard to alienate half my potential investors. The idea that women wouldn't be interested in investing in beer is as thoroughly dopey as thinking fashion is unmanly -- Bernard Arnault is a multi-billionaire, in large part due to very expensive frocks, shoes and handbags.

The 132 page blurb channels a mix of the Mad Men TV series …

Oh, you mean the show where all the “moments of manhood” tend to involve drunkenly peering through a bank of cigarette smoke into the existential voice of fear, self-loathing, loneliness, and impotent failure that is you worthless (but exquisitely styled) life?

    Good to know.

That this is turning into an attack on Shearer’s character is a trifle absurd.

Well, if this turns out to be no more than "someone told me something" I'm not sure it says anything about Shearer's character. But, boy, it says a metric fuckton about his political judgement.

Even mucking around with Coronation Street’s timing is done in a disrespectful way.

Personally, I find it slightly more disrespectful that if you wanted to see excellent local documentaries Brother Number One , When A City Falls and an early version of Maori Boy Genius you were shit out of luck if your dial was stuck on the state-owned broadcaster's flagship channel. But, as they say, different strokes for different folks.

Nope. Hasn’t changed in hundreds of years. Lets go for the messenger!!!

Well, of course, this can all be settled when David Shearer produces evidence to back up the pretty damn serious allegations he made on Campbell Live tonight. I’m certain John Campbell would broadcast it in a heartbeat. Right?

Don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve some serious credibility issues with anything any of the GCSB’s secret squirrels have to say at the moment. Waiter, I’d a verified primary source with my grain of salt, because I thought that’s what real journalists do for a living.

But hang on a minute……if there has been an “unauthorised disclosure of information"…I wonder who they are looking for if there is no video???

I think you’re being a tad cute there, Ross – unless Shearer actually went on television tonight and had the mother of all delusional episodes (which I find hard to credit), he got those allegations from somewhere. And I don’t think you need to be a conspiracy nut to accept that it’s a legitimate area for inquiry.

  • Hard News: The Advocate,

Perhaps there’s some truth in the criticism. When Campbell reporter John Sellwood accompanied a group of West Coast miners on their mission to Wellington, to beg a reprieve for Spring Creek, the question of whether the government should subsidise coal didn’t get a look in. Sellwood was part of the mission, rather than an observer of it.

And that’s the big problem I have with journalists getting into ‘campaign’ mode. If you’ve got an editorial bias on an issue, I’d much rather have my nose rubbed in it so I know where that stink is coming from. But when you’re omitting inconvenient facts and non-trivial context– or not allowing the possibility that the story’s a little more complicated that you pre-determined narrative – that’s still bad journalism.
