  • Cracker: Flashback,

    wicked. now i get it.

main thing to remember is that cats are attention seekers because they are basically social animals.

like dogs, if they're taught properly when they're young they can be very well behaved. but even if they're older there is redemption.

the cat 'romany' i mentioned before had been pretty badly treated by her previous people, and wouldn't let anyone touch her. scratched everyone and anyone.

after about a year of gentle goading you could pick her up and blow bubbles on her belly.

  • Cracker: Flashback,

    D. you're right about the attention thing. some cats like to be ignored. but others are like dogs and just love you to death.

advice: don't start loving her back.

and... i always thought your avatar was a speedboat crashing.

    seemed weirdly appropriate.

  • Cracker: Flashback,

also important to remember that cats don't speak english the way dogs do.

i've always communicated to cats in tongue clicks.

    seriously. they respond incredibly

a few of the bigger companies in australia put a clause in their contracts.

"that any complaints from the public will result in withdrawal of said contract, and no further acceptance of tenders by that company."

quietest (but leery-est) damn construction sites you've ever seen.

but as for harrassment. i was in a situation in a kitchen where i explained to the chefs that they were under no circumstances talk to me ever about my gf at the time. very, very strong language was involved, and seemed to work.

when i wasn't there to enforce it...

Perhaps the two strategies, yoru pragmatism, and my call-them-on-it, need to be deployed together.

    viva la difference

  • Stories: Injuries,

i was teasing my much-beloved cat "romany" (may she rest in peace) a few years back. she responded, rightfully, by scratching my palm just at the base of the thumb (which i thought was called "the mount of venus". the NSFW picture on wikipedia has informed me that i'm wrong).

the scratch went from below my thumb to about 10cm along my forearm. it was a beauty that i deserved. it got infected, and swole in to an angry, but shallow, cut that has turned in to a nice scar.

so, at least one person saw the infected cut, took my hand very gently and said, "che... i just want you to know... i value you as a person and think you're a great friend. if you ever need to talk.."

i didn't catch on till she gave me the number for suicide hotline.

    thanks riddley.

took a bit of writing, laptop perched on my knees in airports.

    but then... better than confinement-to-office.

would be interested in comments from any female commenters here.

especially you debs. i think we, once again, wrote the same piece (i think we need to co-author a journal article).

I think it's sad that your repeated appearances were so focused on some perceived slight to yourself, and had no substantial contribution to the wider issue. Ultimately, dude, this post wasn't about you; it was about us. I hope you can get over it.

then... why take a swing at the guys under the pretense of getting the girls online.

why not just say, "grrl-only commenters"? sure the guys here would respect that.

i comment on NRT, span and this. mostly this, and rarely about politics. i'd like to talk about say, unions with span, but simply cannot. (work)

oh, and i can vouch for deborah! loved that buzz bar by the way. "theatre" needs to be yelled in more work meetings...

i think more guys comment here because that's russell's community of interest. and the net is alllll about community.

i don't read or comment on chickenhawk sites or rwdb because i don't associate with those people in real life.

so... what we have here is a site with usual, liberal, left-leaning guys chatting. and i'd like to think that women are more than welcome to chime in, exactly the same as they would be if we were out socially.
