I've only read the bits that McLeod quotes in her column. But unless there's a good context, Laidlaw's comments aren't very good either.

Anyway, anyone who thinks stacking teams with 'Pakeha' players is going to guarantee better results hasn't been watching the Sevens lately.

Or indeed NZ rugby. Several of our best players over the past twenty years - Lomu, Umaga, Bunce, Rokocoko, Muliaina, Sivivatu, Nonu have strong Pacific Island heritage. Plus, y'know, a couple of Maori have taken to the game as well.

Or the bath, immediately post shower.

My dogs do that if they can. I think that's to do with it tasting like you - fat, oil, bits of skin. In much the same way that a dog might lick you I guess. And umm gross.

Kyle did you just call Bernie Fraser a "darkie"? wtf man?

No, Andy Haden did. Those quote marks are there for good reason.

It was quite a nice racist perfect storm wasn't it. An ex-All Black who is a World Cup Ambassador, but who went to South Africa with the Cavaliers, calls people darkies, in the process of acusing a rugby club of having a racist quota, a few short weeks after the NZRU is shamed by the South African Union into belatedly saying "oops" for their racist selection policies. And then "darkie" Bernie Fraser jumps in to support him.

It ain't surprising that the media is all over it.

  • Hard News: The Future of the Future,

too many answers were flashed to viewers before they got a chance to participate at home.

I saw about 20 minutes of it - my partner and I are a fan of quizzes - and this is what annoyed me the most. The question was often about the show or the year of the clip, and the audience got that information put at the bottom of the screen when they showed the clip.

Surely the entertainment celebrity quiz show format can't be that hard to get right can it?

They also seem to prefer semi-stagnant, for some reason.

That's most likely because water loses its chlorine once it's been standing for about 24 hours. Fresh tap water will still have its chlorine in it.

  • Hard News: A Real Alternative,

People who want to read the academic rebuttal to Bryder's book should check out The Cartwright Papers, edited by Joanna Manning. I had the opportunity to proofread Barbara Brookes essay “The Making of a Controversy: History, Medicine and Politics” to try and find holes in it before it was published. If the rest of the book is as good it's quite damning.

  • The best the Net can be,

Just getting into The Wire, and I was truly confused when the two cops (one homicide and one narcotics) used conventional typewriters. I started to wonder what decade I was in, and then they mentioned the Twin Towers.

That wouldn't date it too much. A minor theme in the show was the difficulty police had in getting decent resources. The computers they used for surveillance certainly weren't decades old. But computers to put on a cop's desk? Budget cuts baby.

Also typewriters are very useful for filling in pre-printed forms where things need to go in the box. Police paperwork is often a nightmare.

  • Hard News: The Future of the Future,

So sure, 'dancing with the changing room stars of Coronation Street while finding a place in the sun' can pay for your daily runing costs, but maybe the should be a slice of the pie for speculative stuff that might pay off only in the longer view, too.

I'm quite happy if dancing with whatever and pop whatever is on tv and makes good money, as long as the channels still put the occasional good movie, documentary and tv series on. If the former helps pay for the latter, even better.

Occasionally I'll even watch one of the 'trashy' shows. Happily sit down in front of survivor for an hour and that Bret Michaels and the Bimbettes show is good stupid fun.
