  • Hard News: Stop the Enabling,

Some people just don't know when to shut up and take their medicine.

Are you kidding? He's in print, again, saying anything he likes without challenge, again. If you have no shame or worries about consistency, it's just continuous win.

He and Garth McVicar are obviously on speed-dial for the nation's journalists, and what they say doesn't matter.

Perhaps because of the number of times any BDSMer will be told they MUST have been abused as a child.

That's not how it works. And it gets kind of old.

    Honestly, I had no idea.

Can we pretend I made a joke about make-up sex instead?

A smack on the hand with a plastic spatula then they get a cuddle afterwards.

And so a new generation of BDSM enthusiasts is formed.

  • Up Front: Are We There Yet?,

It's arbitrary to subscribe to the Judeo-Christian version

For the sake of putting the credit/blame where it belongs, I want to point out that in Judaism marriage is strictly speaking a civil contract (contrast for example with the bar mitzvah or circumcision). Divorce is permitted, if not encouraged, and there is nothing, absolutely nothing, that resembles the notion of a sacrament. All that "better to marry than to burn" stuff etc is Christian.

Judeo-Christian is a term coined by the American Christian right to make themselves sound pluralistic and inclusive as they try to enforce their narrow doctrines (traditionally US Jews have been on the frontlines of ensuring civil society stays secular and it's a term of deception to try and defang them). Avoid where possible.

I have clear memories of returning to Wellington in late 2000, early 2001, when the cocktail revival was flourishing, and ordering a martini. It was tasteless. And so were several of its successors, in different bars. I was puzzled as I saw the Tanqueray and Bombay Sapphire bottles (and the heinous prices). Gradually I realised the terrible truth: I like the taste of cheap gin.

On the contrary: Gordons is good. Gordon's has taste. These weak, over-refined, pallid gins are for people who really ought to be drinking vodka.

One thing that boggled me was that there are no welfare inspections unless a member of the public makes a complaint. Well, I don't know about you, but I don't casually drop into pig farms for a look around. I imagine most pig farms don't have strangers visiting from one year to the next.

How could this possibly pass for a reasonable regulatory regime?

    Don't be so sure, Rich.

Last year more than 700,000kgs of pork was imported every week to be made mainly into bacon, ham and smallgoods. This is around 40% of NZ consumption.

    referece.

Local free range bacon, looking at current prices, is substantially more expensive than the bacon made from imported pork.

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

On the other hand, philandering on its own doesn't destroy reputations in NZ, but philandering mixed with hypocrisy does. Graham Capill, anybody?

I do not think that word means what you think it means.

Philandering is when you can't keep it in your pants, and might be no more than a peccadillo. Child sex abuse is something quite different and much more serious.
