is this the most obnoxious article yet from Laws?
Why would I read anything by Michael Laws? I really can't see how my life could possibly be improved by that.

That's the spirit, Dalziel! You know the drill; take the bit between your teeth.

The same issue applies to music. If you make a mix of songs from different CDs, some will sound louder than others. Programs like iTunes have a feature to equalize this, but generally over the past 20 years bands have all been trying to sound louder.
The technical term for squishing low (and high) volume bits closer to the average so that there's a constant volume level is compression , if you want to google up this hateful phenomenon.

does anyone else find the ASB ads a touch anti-semitic?
It's always rubbed me up the wrong way, but since he's always portrayed as a lovable innocent abroad, it's hard to get too upset about it. It's his WASPy boss who's the fiendish financier.
I asked people on a local mailing list I belong about it, and the consensus seemed to be "meh." Whatever ire there was at the beginning has long since faded away.

Any culture that sits around just rehashing the classics is one that has ceased be interested in itself as it is and thus will miss important movements and developments.
I dunno. If we have continual, evenly-paced innovation, how will we recognise "important movements and developments?" Only when we have stultifying conformity can it be smashed.

Ah well, in that case perhaps it's worth mentioning that US eggs (according to my sister) are very small, a bit smaller than our size 6 in fact, so you have to be careful not to over-egg your American baking.
Thanks for the recipe Amy!

they cook into shallow nubbly domes.
Yes! That sounds just like the cheese puffs I like so much.
I really like them. I'll dig out my recipe and post it next week.
Please do. I have made polite enquiries and been rebuffed.

Regardless of his condition you do not leave fallen comrades. You do all you can for them and hope for the best!
They're police, not soldiers. Which is a good thing.
Apart from what others have said, I can think of a couple other things:
- there may be someone else in the house.
- it may be that they can't get a clear shot AND keep the place surrounded. Houses aren't exactly bullet-proof. So if you want to protect the public, wait him out.
