  • Island Life: In another league,

Whatever way you look at it, though, did anyone else look at his wife with their wee baby on her hip, and feel uneasy?

did you see the pic in the Sunday Star Times.......the angle was different.....could have been a page three stunner.

I'm torn between it being terrible on the part of the Sunday papers OR on the part of the mother/wife.

  • Hard News: And on into a whole new year,

The Herald are clueless. Sideswipe featured a photo of a piece that said 'Supercalifrajilisticexpelidocious' (sp?) with the caption "Nice Tag". Sorry Ana but that was a 'piece', not a 'tag'.

and the scary bit is that thay arent even recent terms, they have been getting it wrong for more than a decade.

supercali.... was a nice piece though.

I was actually rather relieved by the rest of SatHeralds tagging coverage. Both discussing the "broken windows" theory as discredited and having a whole article about a homeowner who had to paint his fence almost weekly with the jist of the article being that it is no big deal.

  • Southerly: Overheard on a Bus,

I know most people don't care, and when you're a parent, one thing is much like the other, I would imagine.

Speaking as a parent I certainly do know the difference. there is probably vast difference between some kindies, and some childcare centres are probably awesome. however if kindies cost MORE than childcare I would still still have my kids there.

I have to be able to trust them to help guide those brains to be ready to learn. gently and openly. and that does not mean making my kids be able to read earlier, or be more advanced, thats way short sighted.

    :)

im just trying to say: your type are appreciated Jackie. truly.

  • Southerly: Overheard on a Bus,

I'm 32, and I've never pronounced those two sounds differently, nor do I recall being taught to. If I try, I end up affecting an exaggerated English accent for "share" and "air" (in the manner of the famous Bill T James "air hair lair" sketch...)

pretty much ditto, dammit, i want to feel cultured. does this mean i am scruffy too?

Deborahs Vowel exercise makes sense though...putting it in practice is tricky. How can i reprogram my diction? should I just call in the CIA and do it properly?

I blame the internets and txt speak. I should be getting an ACC subsidy due to it. Or should I just sue the Government?

  • Hard News: Another nail in the coffin of…,

I just think one of these things can't last.

    absolutely true.

we are in the middle of big big change, and there is more to come. I cant say i will miss the big corporates, they have been ripping off artists (and making lots of money for some) and creating absolute pap (and some gems, even manufactured pop gems) within their machine for too long. and they are still doing it, I note Ruben Stoddard (usa pop idol) has recently been dropped from his label....).

The industry may revert back to pre-70's standards, a wide wide long tail with hardly any body, if you will. More artists making a good living, less making sick money, with the odd artist going supanova for a while, meaning they get more sales, even more piracy, but possibly a good retirement fund set up through whatever version of Live performance suits them, and merchandise, licensing. Eventually a REPEATABLE model will rise to the surface, it may take a long time though.

However much i enjoy good commentary on the issue, here and dubber particularly, so much will keep changing over the next few years, Its almost foolish to try to predict. There WILL be some new and innovative approaches to DRM tried, probably drasticly different to what we connsider DRM currently. Which is kinda what I think you are getting at in some of your posts, Its not gonna be anything like what has been tried so far, and it probably wont work. but it also wont neccesarily be as stupid as those tried in the past either.

    sorry,...... I'll get my coat

thats quitter talk Robbery, you can do it, YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!

come on finnster, start stirring again, this has been the most painfully entertaining PA thread evar.

maybe PAsys should have colourable text or something simmilar, to show irony, sarcasm, miscieviousness. because I can tell when Robbery is playing devils advocate, no one should have been surprised when he mentioned that he DID d/l lots on p2p himself.

    "big gay house"???????

    ?????? ?

sorry for being obtuse, I wasnt sure what angle to attack that phrase from....I am not clear on what gay house is (not even gettting into the minefield of sexuality discrimination...). My initial reaction is that it would describe the high energy poppy dance music of the early nineties, glossy and airbrushed. Or would it be a reference to the birth of House music, the warehouse, Frankie Knuckles et al.......

either way I have trouble attaching such a desription to Carl Craig, and cartainly not David Holmes or Adam Freeland. imho. for what its worth.

I think there's a little something to my point without being rude.
The repetitive and simplified nature of much dance music means you don't have to think too much about the deep and meaningful lyrics or complex chord structures, which probably makes it very good for dancing too, or driving to, a soundtrack while doing something else.

That’s part of it; a lot of the great stuff imho isn’t necessarily simple/dumb but more long form covering up complex subtle shifts in melody or tension. A lot of the great Carl Craig stuff for example has a direct linage back to Herbie hancocks Chameleon for example, whilst a lot of the more dubby house/techno can be traced straight to Miles Davis incredible early seventies work.

and it can be incredibly engaging also, not just background music.

I've found Burial to be a lot of hype and no substance. Quite boring, actually, and attracting attention away from other acts who IMO are much more worthy of it: Kode9, for example, whose recent album Memories of the Future (feat. The Spaceape) is just frankly incredibly good.

Oh yes, Kode9, wonderful stuff, do seek out his remix of The Bugs "Skeng" divine. The most recent Burial album is a bit tricky, with more of a garage influence. But do go back and listen to the first one, it is more drawn out and spacious than kode9, but hearing some of the same samples used in different ways is quite rewarding. Burial is apparently quite definitely now way even close NOT aphex twin.......

gorgeous big gay house music from Ian Pooley, Carl Craig, David Holmes, Adam Freeland and a load of others makes home and car listening eminently possible without external stimulants.

    "big gay house"???????

  • OnPoint: Summer of Shadbolt,

Sam Morgan: "We ask prospective employees if they have a MySpace page. If they say no, that shows they're not engaged enough in the web for our business....."

good grief, surely they want to actually hire SOME people with a degree of critical thinking capability. Having a Myspace page is hardly showing you are aware of how the intertube works....some would say it means the opposite.

I can just picture all the TradeMe employees showing up to work, riding in on their segways, ipods plugged in, all listening to James Blunt, followed by Jose Gonzales. MochaFrappaFluffy on the way in, All made of Ticky Tacky, All smiling all the same.
