    simon:

What does offend people is the idea, touted over and over again that "we saved your butts".

i could not agree more. what has been pointed out to you a number of times james is that the usa did not enter the war to "save the world". it entered the war entirely out of self-interest.

the usa is happy to receive positive press about its role in any international fora, but is quick to point out the misnomer that it "won world war 2" whenever it is criticised. which is, quite frankly, a lie.

i.e. "why are are the french opposing us invading iraq! ungrateful bastards! we saved their slings in ww2".

so yes. i am happy to state that the pacific theatre was won by the americans. but a bald acceptance of that statement overlooks pivotal battles like the kokoda trail, the first major loss by the japanese on land. a campaign fought with american supplies, but by australian infantry.

by themselves neither of those two things would have won that crucial campaign in ww2. in effect, australia saved it's own arse, with a little help from an ally.

    james:

let's acknowledge reality and the tremendous good America has done in the world and of which we are all beneficiaries.

no one in this thread is denying the positive role the usa can and does play in world affairs on occasion. but none of us are willing to be acquiescent in the face of gun-toting tennessee hicks telling us to "shut the fuck up" because of american self-interest in 1941.

which is how this ww2 conversation started.

Of course I cannot be held accountable for any missing laptops...

neither. i'm sure those pcs are just in a basement somewhere. 5000 employees, at least one computer per? a few are bound to end up under lock and key somewhere.

i was more driving at the categorisation of files. human behaviour being what it is, sometimes finding anything is a freaking nightmare.

for example, at one point i found that all nzl universities have completely different coding...

riddley, i heard second-hand that the speech to the salvation army in chch flew like a lead balloon.

apparently the audience was very well misjudged by the speech-writers.

naturally, this isn't stopping dpf calling it "fan-bloody-tastic".

what's all this stuff about world war 2?

apparently all criticism of america is to be stopped immediately, because they "saved the world" in dubya, dubya two.

we've been pointing out that this was not the case.

but merc just godwined the thread with a three year old story about the bushes being supporters of nazi germany. thank god.

indeed. guadalcanal would not been possible had midway not been such a great victory. but midway would not have been possible had the american carrier fleet been in pearl harbour on dec 7th. torch on the other hand was a landing in the face of light opposition.

i would also add that the greatest tool of world war 2 was not the sherman tank. the sherman was a light piece of crap universally derided by the allies. it was commonly known by the british as the "tommy cooker" because of high causalities.

the russians only used them because they had to. their real advantage was the t-34, a tank feared by the germans and which lead directly to the development of the tiger and panther series.

the greatest tool of the war was bletchley park. three cheers for the boys with the leather elbow patches!

spelt the kids name wrong in my anger...

but, have walked away for awhile, and... i'm still pissed off at that wishart statement.

the point of the name "ismail" is that this guy probably identifies with ishmael, the son disowned by abraham.

he's probably doing what most isolated kids do and identifying with something the mainstream dislike, 'islam'. back in my day it was heavy metal, or goth music.

for wishart to state that "the religion of peace" is to blame for this, is fundamentally dishonest.
