Oh FFS... Let's see, someone whose contract was not renewed for undisclosed reasons claims she was "rather uncomfortable" because Lee was standing behind her?

If the exchange took place as reported, yes, it was troubling. If it didn't happen like that, then Lee should simply have kept her appointment with the reporter and explained how it did go.

Quick note for Russell: Just because you've made up your mind doesn't mean Plunket should throw all scepticism out the window.

His lack of scepticism was my complaint.

Frankly, he sounded like he'd had a late night and was just reading what was in front of him.

And David should fucking explain the details, otherwise why shouldn't I think he's just making shit up?

He did actually try and explain the details, but it was hard to hear him over Sean shouting gotcha questions at him ...

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

Looks like we find out who Rodney Hide has picked for the ATA uber-board (which will have the final say on any decisions by elected councils) early next week.

    I can hardly wait.

The Minister can appoint anyone they wish, achieve any composition they desire, and there's not even a requirement for a token lay person or iwi rep.

Good grief. Did McCully write that one too?

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

Meanwhile, back at the ranch Melissa Lee may be discovering that the quickest way out of parliament is the slightest whiff of the misuse of public funds...

The story's not quite right: Hone Harawira still has his northern media empire, but he seems to have managed potential conflicts well enough.

I would certainly have some sympathy with Lee given that hers was a business of long standing. The fact that it continued to receive funding to make a programme it has made for ages isn't a scandal.

But some of the rest ... hovering over a reporter editing a story about the Botany electorate race (where Pansy Wong was standing) after claiming to have withdrawn from any editorial role on the programme; possibly using time and staff paid for by the taxpayer to make a National Party campaign video. Those are bad.

The striking thing is how quickly Lee has become a liability to National. The fact that she pulled out of the Campbell Live interview speaks volumes.

Actually, I feel that the news story we're missing at the moment is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: the surprise appointment of a businessman to chief executive and Murray McCully knifing NZ Aid and snaffling its budget for his own purposes. You have to wonder how he gets away with it.

Even the Herald editorial column is asking WTF about that.

  • Speaker: Economics of the Waterview Tunnel,

Am I not the only one to suspect that the amount of time and money paying off the potentially displaced residents will be wildly optimistic?

The way it's shaping up, the new proposal looks like being a veritable masterwork of wild optimism.

David Shearer's interview with Sean Plunket this morning was just daft. Shearer tried to explain how the respective costs had been fiddled and Plunket basically saying "but it says here".

Newsflash Sean: sometimes governments issue ropey figures when they're trying to sell an idea.

Shearer would be better advised to just start using phrases like "creative accounting" and "raiding the piggy bank". It'd work better than trying to explain the details.

  • Hard News: Modern Lolz,

    @Peter

Having watched both the new Reggie Perrin and the new Red Dwarf I can tell you not to bother. The RD was weak and the cast clearly were going through the motions, it was also not funny, in the slightest.

Martin Clunes is manifestly not the right person to play Reggie, I presume he got it after his performance as a grumpy country doctor.

The Red Dwarf reunion three-parter was painfully self-referential and basically a channel promotion. I'm inclined to be a bit kinder to Reggie Perrin.

Over here we live in fear of a rehash of Fawlty Towers.

And doesn't all the past week's 'Fawlty Towers Re-opened' hoopla point rather chillingly that way?

If that happens Peter, we'll need to travel to London and drive your car into the BBC headquarters. It'll hurt, but someone has to make a stand, right?

  • Speaker: Economics of the Waterview Tunnel,

Smith has just put the urgent debate re the Waterview Connection off because the decision hasn't been made.

I think he's been a pretty good Speaker so far, but today he also allowed Key to just plain not answer Goff's question about the costs of creating the super-city. Key instead answered a completely different question. Bah.

That said, I can't disagree with his take on Conchords. They didn't raise a smile with me...I just didn't get it, although I understood what I was supposed to get. And I've found it's not a smart thing to say in NZ unless you want to get verbally hammered.

    You didn't like Ep 5 Season 2?

The one directed by Michel Gondry?

When Jemaine slept with an Australian?

And they did 'Too Many Dicks on the Dancefloor'?

    Bastard!
