Do you mean Grant Major is there as Production Designer? As far as I know, he's not done DOP work before...

    Duh. Brainfade.

Cool, thanks. He LOVES the art around our place and friends' so hoping he'll actually be pretty into it...

I'll be interested to know what he makes of the Patricia Piccinini works. Especially this one.

No, that is not a real child. But crouching down next to it was like entering another reality.

No, that would be Joe Biden:

The day after President Barack Obama urged the flu-worried masses to stay calm, Vice President Joe Biden went off the rails, saying he has urged family members to avoid airplanes and subways.

Art Fair suitable to take a 9month old around? Or is it all a bit "quiet environment for contemplation"?

It certainly wasn't quiet last night. I think you'd be fine.

  • Hard News: There is History,

From Macdoctor's roundup of facts and fallacies:

The World Health Organisation has increased their alert level to 5, indicating that a pandemic is now almost inevitable. Bear in mind, however, that we essentially get a pandemic of influenza every year. Although this virus is likely to be significantly more dangerous than the standard influenza virus, it is also likely to turn out more like the Hong Kong flu pandemic rather than the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic. There will be some tragedies and some disruption to life - but the world will not come to an end.

You could call it something like Connecting the Clouds. :)

That would certainly be the primary text. But Keith Newman's book is almost unfeasibly comprehensive. A doco would be some people's best stories.

I just watched the episode on TVNZ ondemand and I really enjoyed it!

    Thanks!

I normally have a reasonable sense of timing in managing discussions. The internet one, I just got so absorbed I didn't even get to half my questions.

Afterwards, Nat informed me of the look in my eyes as it dawned on me that I'd actually asked him a question about the relative robustness of the TCP/IP protocol ...

In fact, I was left wanting more, like a feature-length documentary about the net in NZ. We all have stories to tell. Can't someone with a camera do something?

I had exactly the same thought afterwards. So many stories. It's a long road to get these things to air, but I'd really love to do that.

True, and I think that Poneke's take on this is ridiculous to the point of being dangerous.

I really value Poneke's presenece, but his take on scepticism is often all attitude and not much reason.

Like, don't get him started on Y2K.

Having actually been an IT reporter through the period in which legacy two-digit date fields were identified as a problem, then largely rectified, I'm quite clear on the fact that there were potentially dangerous problems, especially with the heavily-accreted, bespoke software used to manage utilities.

We'd already seen date-related failures manifest in New Zealand ATM machines after midnight Dec 31 in previous years. It was actually quite rational to take out a little extra cash on the last day of 1999 (I did), because if the system was going to fail, it was going to fail first in New Zealand.

As it happened, people had done a pretty good job of fixing code over the past five years, and very little happened on the night. That's not the same thing as there never having been a risk.

The link to the current virus situation is that there's a whole lot of just-don't-know about it.

  • Hard News: Madness in Mt Albert,

they get one more to add to their coalition majority which is already very solid... not particularly important except for the people involved

I think the legislative advantage outlined by Graeme isn't trivial. It would genuinely strengthen National's hand.

But perhaps I should downgrade my VERY BIG DIFFERENCE to a QUITE BIG DIFFERENCE ...

    ;-)

  • Hard News: Madness in Mt Albert,

A National victory would mean that they could govern/pass laws etc. with just an ACT abstention. At present, National needs support from Peter Dunne in addition to an ACT abstention to get things done.

Oh, wow. So a National victory would make A VERY BIG DIFFERENCE ...

Has anyone else worked this out? It seems germane.
