If you have keys in multiple places, then any man-in-the-middle or other hacking attempt becomes obvious, and is likely to reveal more about the attacker and their methodology than they would like.

(For this reason, I'd regard M웃M intereption of SSL traffic by government agencies as unlikely, even if they have (as they possibly do) root private keys. The moment they did it at any scale, someone would pick up on the altered key and raise a flag, revealing the technique).

Absolutely. They don't even need to do that - they can give Labour their support on the initial confidence vote, and leave all else up for negotiation.

I don't think this would happen with Robertson/Cunliffe but if Labour elected Shane Jones, it might come down to that.

Grant Robertson holds Wellington Central reasonably securely, but if we had a few more million dollar Mt Vic villas and a bit less social housing, or if the electorate were less sophisticated about voting Labour rather than Green (the Greens lead on the party vote), or even if National fielded a candidate who wasn't a complete tool it would be a different story.

Would that reflect on his leadership ability?

Key distribution, that's the hard part. Ensuring that you have the public keys of everyone you want to contact and that these haven't been tampered with.

It's a hard problem, partly because of the risk of the man-in-the-middle attack (where somebody intercepts your traffic, substitutes the key and encrypts/recrypts your mail). I think the community got a bit hung up on this though - it should be possible to build an infrastructure that's strong enough and tamper-evident enough to make systematic monitoring very difficult.

The gallery journalists will froth anyway about how the new leader is an out of touch commie who's hated by the party and smells to boot. That's their job )and predeliction) - they're National supporters, even if they pretend not to be to keep some credibility.

What's needed, and what Russell Norman does very well and Labour doesn't is to bypass these people and crack on relentlessly about the issues that divide the 1% of the mega-rich who control National from everyone else in the country.

  • Speaker: Naked Inside the Off-Ramp,

What Kier should have written, unconnected to anyones post, subtweet style:

It would be nice if uninformed commentators wouldn't pretend to knowledge they don't have.

It would be nice if those who shill for politicians would make that clear in their occasional posts, especially when those politicians are notorious pedlars of their vote to the highest bidder.

Come to that, it would be nice if politicans would run for the party they support, rather than hoodwinking their none-too-bright electors that they are some kind of independent centrist who looks at issues as they appear

Keep that aggression passive, for such is the house style...

So basically in the sample we know about (because a court extracted the documentation), they broke the law, and in the samples we don't know about they didn't.

And they denied breaking the law up to the point where they were forced to admit it.

You can draw your own conclusions.

Did the other agency (police) have a warrant to intercept (e.g.) Dotcom's communications?

And Grant was a union leader for some years before becoming an MP. Isn't that all about wages and the cost of living? Silly me for thinking people might be concerned about that, rather than who the guy chooses to sleep with.

all those PI voters...gay Wellington based machine politician

Because everyone from the Islands is a god-bothering homophobe incapable of independent thought who gets their voting instructions from the pulpit on Sunday? Really?

When is Labour going to get over treating ethnic and social groups as voting blocs?
