If this was really as serious as the talk of fascism above, we'd be out on the streets, right?

Otherwise perhaps a little simmering down until he (they) start actually running a single party state, espousing Darwinian Elitism or enrolling Rangitoto College students for rallies down Queen Street in jack boots.

Mind you, cancelling school balls and banning after parties does seem a bit dictatorial, now you mention it.

    And what Gio said.

There's a crony on my pony.

The two rarely meet in the context of this government. Actions trumps law consistently, and to increasingly to my mind to a degree that means law is merely an afterthought, manipulated and diminished. Put simply, what Rodney et al says, goes and law is changed to reflect this.

    Hyperbole, much?

    Whoops.

That's a bit of an understatement. We (i.e. Auckland ratepayers) will have to repay the 70 million government loan by next November?

Excellent. I love the way these millions are just arbitrarily bandied about as if we're all supposed to understand what it is being spent on, who gets the money, and what checks and balances there are in place. To go from 39 million to 112 million one would have to assume not many... [insert Scribe quote]

    Whoops indeed.

For some reasons the terms 'stakeholder' and 'shareholder' seem important distinctions here. Corporate Governance from a Shareholder perspective is quite different from that of the 'Stakeholders', at least in this instance. One wants affordable, clean water when they turn on a tap, and the other wants to know how much they can justify charging per litre. In and out.

I'd be interested to see what Joel Cayford makes of it. He pre-empted it a bit on his blog yesterday.

Not really familiar with this 'spatial plan' proposal.

This, from Herald, doesn't fill me with feelings of democracy in action though.

"Opening the door to the privatisation of Auckland's assets - especially that of water delivery - is also another choice Mr Hide has made," Mr Clendon said.

"Mr Hide's reassurance that water will not be privatised has a hollow ring given the introduction of a Bill that amends the Local Government

Act to allow for contracts of up to 35 years," Mr Clendon said.

Could someone tell me how a detailed enough Statement of Intent would not form a suitable democratic control over the behaviour of a CCO?

That would depend on who wrote it, wouldn't it?

There's some discussion of this here

The discussion document says “Effective working relationships will be essential to the success of this governance model” (page 3). We agree with this statement as a high degree of collaboration will be required to make it work. However, this will require some formal communication structures in place to ensure this will happen. What mechanisms will be put in place to ensure that the proposed CCO’s are responsive to local needs and processes? Clear reciprocal commitments, expectations, accountabilities and reporting need to be built into Local Board Plans as in CCO’s ‘statement of intent’.

And a sample Statement of Intent here.

It might make it more transparent, but I don't see how it will make it necessarily more democratic.

That said, I don't know that I'm suggesting these people so much as disputing the implication there weren't other "older" women TV actresses.

Don't think I actually said that. I was thinking specifically for this role, and struggled to find someone who hadn't already been so type-cast as to make the cringe set in before even starting. Having said that; Parker Posy? Mary-Louise Parker? Helen Hunt? Lucy Liu? Cameron Diaz? Meh.

Frankly any suggestion of Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Garner or Jeniffer-Jason Leigh would have me reaching for the remote. And no, I don't have a thing against Jennifers per se.

Speaking of Joey and Housewives, Drea de Matteo! Now you mention it, I could probably live with that.

"There are pockets of communities in severe hardships. It will also stifle economic growth ... if nothing is done with this sector of the population. so we're trying to lift that."

Is this just the usual bad editing, or are they quoting verbatim, to show they're 'down with it?' Way down.

And yes, I appreciate the irony of me commenting on editing, but then I'm not employed by a newspaper.

Are you saying there aren't many attractive "older" types in Hollywood, or that there is something particular in the way Courteney Cox plays the lead that means she owns the role?

There are plenty, but apart from Toni Collette, who has enough personalities to contend with, who would you suggest for this?
