  • Hard News: Safari 4 beta: seriously quick,

tried to quiz a supposed Apple tech head about Snow Leopard at the 5th Ave Apple store two weeks back. He claimed complete ignorance of it, never heard of it, which both surprised and bemused me.

How odd. Commenting on unannounced products will get you killed at Apple, but Snow Leopard is very much announced.

  • Hard News: Safari 4 beta: seriously quick,

Next you'll be telling us that they like your funky middle-aged white man dance moves.

Or best of all, when I start busting some rhymes! But, as I always explain to them, sometimes it's a dad's job to be annoying.

I'm going to translate "impresses" as: "yeah Dad, great, well done, you're the bomb. Can we have the computer back now? You're wasting the internet."

Leo says: "He's not wasting the internet, he's sitting on it. It's your throne, dad. Because nothing says the internet is your b**** like having a hundred tabs open."

I honestly don't know where he gets these ideas. The internet, probably.

Do you routinely keep 100 tabs open? Let's explore this.

Sometimes I'll open a few more just to get it up to three figures. Impresses the kids.

The upshot of that kind of use is that I usually had to force-quit Safari 3.

The portents for Snow Leopard are good: much smaller application footprints, smaller demands on memory, etc. I think this will be worth the wait.

What? You can't leave us hanging like that.

    Replacement para:

This works very smoothly on a 2.4GHz iMac, but I wonder if it'll be so sweet on a Windows PC, or an older Mac, especially one with not much memory installed -- the beta is presently hogging a lot of the 2GB I'm packing. We'll see how it goes when I have 100 tabs open.

  • Hard News: The strange story arc,

but describing this person's demise as "oddly perfect" sounds quite callous to my ear.

Yes, but I'm not talking about her demise as being oddly perfect. It's terribly sad, and I don't think anything I've said here has been unsympathetic -- unlike some of the coldly snobbish "quality" paper coverage.

But Jade Goody's life has been a public narrative since she first appeared in Big Brother in 2002. We're talking about someone who found out she had cervical cancer last year on camera on the Indian version of Big Brother.

That's the story arc: emergence, fame, fall from grace, redemption in the final reckoning. All in public. I honestly don't think it's callous to say that.

  • Hard News: The strange story arc,

My point, and it's not a particularly original one, is that Jade Goody's life is like a story.

Having been defined in genres that are 50% fiction -- reality TV and celebrity tabloid news -- she has transcended both with her actual life. The Secretary of State for Justice intervened so she could have her wedding: it really is like a movie.

Part of why they listen is because they can.

For sure, although there was some fun in going and finding that old stuff when I were a lad.

There are great chunks of the back catalogue of New Zealand musical culture that you might never hear again, if they hadn't been put online in all their scratchy glory.

Cue: my rant about Warners' stewardship of the Flying Nun catalogue. It's such a influential body of music and it could be presented in such a great way.

The MP3 blogs noted recently by robbery show there's a demand. Paul from The Bats might be justifiably annoyed at people giving away his music, but there was no actual way for people to pay for the out-of-print Bats EP in question, even if they'd wanted to.

My long-term goal remains to secure the release of the Alpaca Brothers' Legless EP in digital form. I once regaled Bruce Blucher of said duo with this plan, late in the piece at a Big Day Out. He seemed slightly stunned.

Smashproof, on Kirk Harding, an expat NZer's label, MTC. It deserves to be:

That's great --- a whole mix of influences on a really local vibe. Who is the video by?

I confess, it's new to me. I kind of thought Smashproof were some westie hard rock band ...

That's a little disappointing, as John Barnett has been generally pretty much on the money in the past.

The guy is truly gifted, and the culture owes him a lot. But he's always been fairly maximalist on copyright issues.
