Grant McDougall is working on a tribute, which I’ll post as soon as he’s done.

Written about half of it, will have it to you by 6pm.

I haven’t forgotten Bill English’s disastrous time as leader although he looks pretty statesman like now. I think you’re right, he has the broadest appeal, but I suspect Joyce might have the numbers in the party.

Maybe, but English has stood down as Clutha / Southland MP and gone on the list only, which suggests he's started to think about life after politics. He's been an MP since 1990, so could well be starting to tire of it.

  • Speaker: The End of Trust, in reply to Russell Brown,

Deborah Mahuta Coyle's day job in comms for the Petroleum Exploration and Production Association had much if any bearing on the discussion on Q&A today,

Her column in today's Sunday Star Times about what Peters will do in negotiations was utter tripe as well, nothing more than a string of vacuous clichés that told me nothing I didn't already know.

She was also labeled as being from the left, with Hooten being the other columnist speculating on Peters. I wonder if the SST know she's just a PR for a lobby group ? Bloody hopeless and frustrating.

    Dunno about Bridges and Brownlee.

Bridges is too young, plus he still has anger-management issues, ala the Campbell Live interview. Brownlee has a conviction for assaulting a pensioner (I'm not making that up), so doesn't have a clean sheet.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Mo' Nina,

Those five cd sets are superb, I've treated myself to about 10 of them over the past year or so. They're a pretty good way to get rare stuff you'd otherwise have to pay through the nose for, e.g the Jefferson Airplane set with their v.rare pre-Grace Slick debut.

There's also some good three cd sets, esp. the Leonard Cohen one with New Skin For The Old Ceremony, Death Of A Ladies' Man and Recent Songs on it. Just this arvo I got the three cd Only Ones set at the Warehouse in Mosgiel for $6 !

Labour should really try to schmooze Peters' vanity in this regard: "So, how'd you like your legacy to be as Sir Winston Peters, the man who cleaned NZ politics up...?"

Then again, that just be, er, bribery, and, er, a bit unethical.

Still, I bet Labour's keener to massage his ego than National.

  • Speaker: Telling Our Own Tales, in reply to Joe Wylie,

It also must be remembered that the 'quake struck at 4.30am on a Saturday, so there were far less people in the central city, out and about, etc, so that probably saved a few lives.

A mate of mine tells me a great story of a Dutch tourist being found crashed out in a station-wagon near where the Twisted Hop pub was in the inner city. He'd had a big night out on the booze, went to sleep in his car and couldn't figure out why there were all these bricks all over it the next morning.

  • Speaker: Telling Our Own Tales, in reply to Thomas Beagle,

Anyone want to predict whether Christchurch voters will vote for National more, less, or about the same as the rest of the country?

I asked this question last week to someone who works in the media in Chch. He said there's a good chance that, Ilam aside, the electorates will all go Labour. National holds Chch Central by a mere 47 votes and the re-drawn boundaries take in far more Labour-leaning territory, so that's at least one that'll change.

The whiskey will taste very, very, very good to Winston Peters tonight.

  • Hard News: Didn't see that coming,

Any ideas why Matthew Hooton has been so open in his calls to sack Collins ? Has he had a falling-out with some of the Nats and their mates ?

I'd have thought he'd toed the party line, but he's made repeated calls.
