just chatting about burton. reminded me of a conversation with a writer of erotic fiction at a party in melbourne, she was explaining being alarmed while reading another persons version of her medium.
she insisted quite strongly that the clear boundary between "friendly" or "kinky" bondage and discipline, and the ever-so-slightly dodgy sado-masochism is the introduction of two fluids, blood or faeces.

Did the Zoo have an expectation of vetoing individuals and/or were they expecting to be informed
from my hazy recall of the radio interview with 'man from zoo" this monring, yes, they expected to be informed. they also apologised to burton, but said it was necessary.
-
naturally it would have also been different if the zoo wasn't a place frequented by families. if burton was shovelling shit on a farm they would likely have left him to his shovel.
but the hysteria factor was what made this story particularly disdainful. once again the sunday papers illustrate how disgraceful they really are.
as burton's father himself on nat radio this morning, "it's a pity this had to happen, mark was making good progress in his rehabilitation" (or something to that effect).
mind you, i'd be eating my words if that fateful cry was ever issued, "LOOK OUT!! IT'S BURTON!! AND HE'S ARMED WITH A MEERCAT!"

And lets talk about the money - I have a PhD and 15 years experience and I get paid less than a kindy teacher. And the job prospects.
i got out of academe for that exact reason. i now get to do actual research instead of being a teaching engine, made senior within a year of finishing the phd, and am paid completely respectable money.
david, assuming i'm not preaching to the perverted (if you can hear this, ref. last comment), think of supplementing your $$ from this site. the contracts are fewer than they used to be (lots of agencies are moving their expertise in-house to economise), but there's still occasional money to be made by smart people.
plus, it's business-as-usual to offer small contracts (say less than $15-20k) to a limited number of preferred tenders, if you were to establish such a relationship with a relevant agency.

but, in other news
None of the organs that service a democracy are 'democratic'
democracy is just a way to decide who gets to boss you around and squander your taxes.
i vote me.
