  • Hard News: Conversation Starters,

    @Caleb:

The statistics from 1997 to the present are here. They show an increasing trend, though not a steep one, and it needs noting that per-capita alcohol consumption remains lower than it was in the early 1990s , when regulations were tighter.

The drinking age needs to go back to 20. Alcohol sales in dairies and supermarkets need to cease, and bylaws at the local government level restricting the number of liquor licenses --particularly off-licenses -- need to be enacted and systematically enforced.

But I'd rather have wine and beer being sold alongside food in a supermarket (where they're much tighter on who they'll sell to than your average hole in the wall is). And I'd rather have the Gypsy Tearooms in Grey Lynn than some vile place run by a licensing trust.

The interesting thing about the process of Grey Lynn going "wet" after its licensing status was changed by popular vote in the 90s is that the residents there were willing and able to use the consent process to control what happened next.

I know for a fact that both Malt and the Gypsy Tearooms barshad a long, hard road through the process -- but, clearly, that was a good thing for the neighbourhood in the long run.

  • Hard News: Conversation Starters,

__Forbidding the kind of wine shop where they can actually make good recommendations, for example?__

Yeah, good point. The hole in the wall cases-of-Woodstock place near my last house can go to hell, but any law that gets rid of that little shop in Hillcrest (Hamilton) next to the cycle track is just wrong!

That's kind of what I was getting at. We have one like the former in our locality but, on the other hand, I do like being able to pop into the Wine Vault in Grey Lynn and talk bollocks with the owner while I grab a good bin-end special.

I just didn't think the Herald declaring that it would all be okay if only everyone had a nice glass of wine with dinner was really a solution. So what is a solution for people who understandably don't want trouble-magnet liquor outlets at the end of their streets?

  • Field Theory: The Cricket: a live account,

And with absolutely nothing at stake. They'd already won the series, they already couldn't win the game, it was simply a matter of pride.

Yup. I felt kind of cheap for watching the one-dayer just because my side was playing, when there was something like that going on on the next channel.

I think I'm going to flame war on this...
But seriously, promoting full page view, new templates and outline mode as new features in iWork shows how hard Apple have fallen.

Look at it this way ... it's why they're finishing with Macworld Expo.

There's just no way Macworld suits their product strategy. They're a consumer electronics company now, and launching products two weeks after Christmas is plainly wrong.

There are certainly products on the way. Snow Leopard, an OS upgrade focused on performance and stability, is said to be ahead of schedule, and due mid-year. It'll be out before Windows 7.

The alliance with Nvidia is yet to become visible, but I think there's little doubt that those Mac Minis, festooned with display ports and good for HD video, are coming. And they'll be able to use Open CL to share CPU tasks with the graphics card.

iPhone developers are making money via the App Store, which has revolutionised the business of mobile app development.

And they just put $99 iPhones into Wal-Mart.

    Apple's doing fine.

The Apple press release is up now ...

Beginning today, all four major music labels—Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, Warner Music Group and EMI, along with thousands of independent labels, are now offering their music in iTunes Plus, Apple’s DRM-free format with higher-quality 256 kbps AAC encoding for audio quality virtually indistinguishable from the original recordings. iTunes customers can also choose to download their favorite songs from the world’s largest music catalog directly onto their iPhone™ 3G over their 3G network just as they do with Wi-Fi today, for the same price as downloading to their computer. And beginning in April, based on what the music labels charge Apple, songs on iTunes will be available at one of three price points: 69 cents, 99 cents and $1.29, with most albums still priced at $9.99.

  • Field Theory: Sunshine? Bah!,

Nope, you stick with them for that rare moment, when you least expect it, that they actually pick their sorry arses up and roll one of the big boys.

A bloke I worked with in London was a Wimbledon supporter.

He described to me the period where the Dons clung to a 1-0 lead over Liverpool in their first (and undoubtedly last) FA Cup final as "the worst hour of my life". You could see what he meant.

Good news on the iTunes front, I just wish I found the interface easier to navigate for downloads.

Fer sure. There remain things that really suck about the iTunes Store, but at least that's one thing fixed.

And on the derailing theme, Ron Asheton is dead, damn :(

There's a thread for the paying of respects here ...

RIP, Ron Asheton, guitarist for The Stooges. :(

Aw ... I think he changed rock music more than most people realise. I feel privileged to have heard him peel off those dirty, thunderous guitar licks at the BDO.

The Detroit Free Press has more.
