I don't doubt the economic value of a big, high-quality convention centre
I do. If a commercial enterprise is genuinely viable, then it should be able to happen at a profit within our existing legal framework. If it requires taxpayer funding and legal facilitation it isn't viable.
We don't have a car factory, IKEA store or spaceport in New Zealand. Maybe giant convention centres are another thing that just doesn't work here.

Legal Beagle: $420,259.33, in reply to
The "donor" in question had finished his innings. Dead people aren't usually scared of a lot, really.

Even better, every party donation should be accompanied by a photo of both sides of the credit card with the donor's name, address and PIN, available for public browsing.

tens of thousands of incorporated societies and registered charities in this country whose volunteers have to put in the time and effort to obey the law
I'd be interested what the average number of technical breaches of the law is for such organisations. The only one I've been involved with has certainly made quite few.
Anyway, while you get all uptight about this, what about various (then and current) SOEs (Mighty River, Genesis, Solid Energy) funding Business NZ to spout NACT propaganda on the taxpayers dollar. All perfectly legal, apparently.

I don't think I'd use Whalespunk as my lawyer, thank you..

It isn't really valid to say that exports are the only important sector of the economy.
If we had a total autarchy, except that we exported a small amount of cheese, would the cheese sector be "most" of that economy?

I thought that was Christchurch, but then further research suggested both were a myth: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_space_shuttle_landing_sites#Transoceanic_Abort_Landing_Sites
(Auckland has the longer runway though)

I'd tell them that David Farrar would make an excellent mayor and would find the role a great opportunity to meet girls.

maybe we could try a new approach
Like electing councillors using a fair voting system and then having them choose a leader from amongst their number, as in the way we choose governments?
The current system of directly electing mayors is mostly just a contest to see who's the biggest and loudest dickhead.

He can't run for council or government as he isn't a citizen.
I guess he could set up a party and invite NZ citizens to join the list.
