  • Hard News: Competing for Auckland, in reply to Kumara Republic,

    a longer runway

By the (partly privatised) airport, who probably expect to take a substantial margin 'project managing' said runway while the costs are met by tax and ratepayers.

Wellington won't get long haul flights even if we have a runway long enough for the Space Shuttle. Not enough demand, and with the way most online booking works, if a flight doesn't run every day, it doesn't show up in peoples searches and doesn't get passengers. Christchurch, which does have a huge runway, has conspicuously failed to sustain regular long-haul flights.

  • Hard News: Competing for Auckland, in reply to Alec Morgan,

I think he's got more of a chance than the right and soft left think. RAM got into six figures in ARC elections a few years ago, and they're pretty left wing (being more or less an SWP front).

  • Hard News: Competing for Auckland,

Wasn't "building a second CBD in Manukau" what Len Brown was trying to do when he was mayor of that council; along with North Shore trying to do the same in Takapuna and Waitakere in Henderson?

They mostly seem to have wound up with a Westfield and a large cop shop / courthouse complex.

  • Hard News: Spread the Noise,

the contextless, uncorrected noise of the police radio scanner being streamed to the internet

So even one of America's tech capitals can't afford a working secure emergency services radio network? Must have spent the dollars on donuts.

  • OnPoint: MSD's Leaky Servers, in reply to Matthew Poole,

It's a Verisign Class 3 Extended Validation. Verisign's root keys are in every browser. Unless Ian has a customized browser build, that cert would be recognised as valid.

  • OnPoint: MSD's Leaky Servers,

I think it defaults to what you ask for, e.g. the site is available on http or https.

An increasing number of sites (like this one) are going https-only, because it's easier in many ways (and it makes more work for government spy agencies if everything on the net is encrypted).

  • OnPoint: MSD's Leaky Servers, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

Well, it may be that they had a temporary cert problem, but I went to https://www.msd.govt.nz just now and the certs fine.

Check if you have a proxy server. Proxies should pass through SSL, if they don't then it's a configuration problem (or a cackhanded attempt to pry).

The MSD IP should be something like 202.27.58.107. If ping www.msd.govt.nz doesn't show this, then your DNS is suspect.

I was looking for a way in Chrome to see what IP a page is getting served from, but nothing obvious. There are tools that will do this, but we're getting a bit deep here.

That error means that either the sites SSL certificate is invalid, or someone is man-in-the-middling your SSL traffic.

The MSD SSL cert looks good today and was renewed on 27th Feb. So somebody is clearly trying to spy on you!

  • Hard News: You can Roughan but you just…, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

Don't they have lots of data like that from things like car counters, bus payment cards and the like.

(although they aren't always well integrated, WRC send people out to do bus usage surveys when you'd have thought they could just download the data from Snapper).

  • Hard News: Dressing for the Road,

Do those team replica cycle shirts have a little pocket thing in the sleeve so you can put a line in a shunt and receive your regular dose of drugs without taking the shirt off?
