Hard News: Democracy Night, in reply to
Good point, of course votes for ordinary people is pretty recent so it takes time to get the wrinkles out
Still a good point though -
My point about TM is that it could give a wider view of the populations views on politics compared with here (liberal/left) Kiwiblog (right/raving ) or the Standard (hard left/raving )
I can't say I have followed it enough to say which way it swings or is swung except it seems to mirror the polls which show about 50% National and quite a few Winston followers who I don't come across in the flesh at all -
Check the Trademe forums if you want to see what the people might think, now this could be an area of hotbed torisym but maybe not, certainly is where the little people hang out

Of course Helen Clark was not a scumbag but if she is our greatest PM I think we need a litle more time under the bridge for that judgement
She was less than honest on her intentions if she was not returned as PM unlike John Key who has made his intentions clear but she was a polition to her finger nails and would never revealed her intentions as a possible sign of weaknessI note Mr Goff also has memory lapses on past PM behavior, remember "corngate" and the term "little creep"

Good points Graeme and a clear way to make this anti-democratic law go away
How many to nominate a candidate is the question, 1% of the electrate was my first thought but I doubt if the major parties could find 570 peple to sign a piece of paper
Even a hundred would take some organising for a first time movement but on the other hand we do not want to make it too easy to fill the ballot with nut-cases
57 .1% has a nice ring to it -
Hard News: The perils of political confidence, in reply to
I agree, this is just a sideshow and it is a pity Labour and the media are being sucked in
" Look over there"
How likely is it these two would say anything incriminating with a scrum of journalists just through the glass, hopefully Key was saying he would not be voting for Banks which he did go onto say publicaly
If there was a real story, it would out by now -
Graeme, rreat frisk of David Farrar
Not a good idea for Goff to use the word "rort" which is defined
"a financial impropriety, particularly relating to a government programme"When the loyal Labour Supporter Jim Anderton has been rorting us all with his so called seperate party leadership pay-outs, you know the party where when he goes the next best person to replace him is a real Labour person

Hard News: Walking upright again, in reply to
I feel this will be one of the hidden but real long term damage that the quakes have done
That is the effect that the constant stress will have on peoples personal lives -
Speaker: Doing the right thing on retirement, in reply to
We don't pay taxes to save for our retirement
I not sure that was how it super was sold to us, people my age feel we have been taxed as a form of compulsory saving for our old age and that we have an entitlement to that, don't forget we told/thought we would get it when we turned 60, so we have already given up 5 years
I also feel we should have to put a disclaimer at the bottom of the comments on this subject as it is clear present age and expectations skew points of view
Disclaimer: Aged 62,and have been retired (self-funded) for 5 years

The other bug bear with MMP; is the lists or rather the non democratic way some of them are picked/ranked
Maybe a way to help would be to encourage (by law) more voters to be registered to the parties who could then do the ranking in primaries before an election
This would whip up more interest in the parties and the election
The other plus would be a chance for parties to solve their financial problems by having a registration fee, hopefully low enough for some of us to pick the list in more than one party!
Win, win all round
