  • Hard News: Friday Music: The First Time,

first local gig: Fourplay at the Papatoetoe Community Hall. was all rather exciting for a young fulla having one of his first nights out on the turps. they played Who covers and such like Brit beat pop. As I recall, I ended up dancing among the band - not too much damage was done.

first proper local gig: Spilt Enz with Penknife Glides at Logan Campbell - Waiata tour maybe? So impressed with the Glides I got my grandma to knit me a jersey just like the singer's.

first international gig: Siouxsie and the Banshees at Mainstreet with Jon Zealando. most exciting moment - band aside, incl Robert Smith, who rocked - was sidling up with a mate till we ended up standing next to Michael O'Neill from the Meemees - bit of a squee moment that was. then we parked outside and waited for the Banshees to leave. we followed them until we realised what dickheads we were being, then slunked back to Mangere before anyone noticed.

was just up at Real Groovy and caught the Henry Wagons and the Wagons instore. great band in an outlaw, bluesy-country fashion. he's a bloody funny guy with it and has something of the beardy Jeff Lynnes about him.

they're at the Kings Arms tonight, and I recommend them most highly indeed.

mate, that sounds like good times to me. I hope you've got a good stash of needles though. they don't last very long at all and soon become nails that scratch more than play.
saying that though, is a 50s model powered?
I've only ever tudooed about with hand-cranked 20s/ 30s models.

plus one on the Swans, and how's about Richard Hawley? sure, there's a couple of plodders on his last album, but when he sets his fingers and tonsils to it he's still nigh untouchable.

yeah, the snark has been interesting and I'm sure Reed, being a contrary bastard, wouldn't have given a shit. but aren't there some joyless, self-satisfied asshats around? I guess there's an element of Slater's look at me factor involved.

and I go along with how you've summed him up, but I've long given up on saying anyone was the wellspring of anything musically - people were recording all manner of madness with electric guitars from the moment Link Ray poked a pencil through his speaker cone, and I'd even take that milestone under advisement.

and just to share - got this 7 in the mail yesterday - honest to goodness, crank it to 11 and then some, geetar-soaked, psych styles...just the business to iron my shirt to this morning
