  • Hard News: There's a lot of it about,

One factor which will be having some sway, although it's hard to say how much: to general shock and amazement, Peters has been a reasonably good foreign affairs minister, especially with respect to our relations with governments in the Pacific, which are very important. As things stand, our management of relations in the region puts Australia's to shame.

I'm with RB, I'm sick of it all and really disappointed in the PM in not sacking WP when she had the chance. I simply cannot understand why she hangs on and refused to censure him.

Oh, I can. You're in politics because you believe you have the best ideas, and you usually don't get to act on those ideas unless you're in government. You make the calculation that it's better to take the hit in the longer-term interests of being able to form a government.

But, as everyone is saying, why go so far?

while Labour haven't shown a skerrick of trust and faith towards the Greens.

It is worth remembering that Labour sustained as much political damage through supporting a Green MP's private member's bill.

Perhaps, but that's what annoys me about this; Labour's tainted by association, not by deed. If Peters and Key have both lied the public, it's only electoral calculations that preclude Labour from condemning both...

    Nicely put.

Of course. A young woman. Not technically a child.

Without wishing to unnecessarily divert this excellent discussion of a great piece of autobiographical writing, am I the only one who read the above and thought of a Britney Spears song?

Jesus Christ Danyl... Are you REALLY thanking shadowy people with an agenda paying private investigators to go through someones's dirty linen until they finally find a blue dress with a stain on it?

I think there was a story (or stories) there before anyone started looking. And to be, honest, I thought about that angle for a week before venturing it here. Apart from anything else, I'm in no position to know if it's true.

But ... that is what people in a position to know are saying.

Why exactly should the Maori Party take the shit that's being thrown at them by Peters, and not call out Horomia if his lobbying is out of line?

    Good on Sharples, I say.

The usual suspects are going apeshit, but I think Sharples has terribly over-egged this, not least in alleging attempts to "pervert the course of justice" (which has an actual meaning) but then being all secret squirrel on names. His complaint about his conversation with Horomia is now down to an observation that it "didn't feel right". If this is "dirty tricks" I'm at a loss ....

Heh - priceless. He's added to my RSS feed.

What amazes me is that he manages to attract comments that are in on the joke and not hordes of irony-challenged dumbarses.

His back catalogue is worth browsing when you have a moment.

My point is that society has moved on, and the concept of criminalising gay sex is completely untenable.

Quite. And around the time of law reform, the usual suspects were lining up to predict the falling of the sky.

My favourite was Norm Jones' speech declaring that New Zealand would become "the sodomy capital of the South Pacific".

I interviewed Bruce Logan of the Maxim Institute during the CUB debate, and he admitted that homosexual law reform hadn't been the calamity he'd thought it would be at the time, and he didn't favour repealing it.

But he still insisted that the sky would fall if we let the buggers get married.
