  • Speaker: Re-Entry III: The Eagle has Landed,

Welcome back - and thank you for discussing the richness of reasons for returning. You'll sadly notice that the Listener has changed in your absence into a sanitised rag celebrating "the single-minded pursuit of wealth".

  • Hard News: The Casino,

all the special effects that created stange creatures were real. They were mucking around with genetic engineering out there on those film sets

Steven, for some reason I'm thinking of Trout Farm in Cronenberg's eXistenZ:

If you haven't seen the whole film, please do. I'd be interested in what you make of it, in any case.

detrimental to something we see as important. But who's to decide that?

A combination of markets and public governance systems, both of them refecting overall power and hence likely to favour cultural forms liked by rich white folk. Orchestras and opera over pop gigs and music vids, oil paintings over weaving and film, books over magazines.

I was struck by the preponderance of expensively-dressed blue-rinsed matrons out for their fix of heavily-subsidised classics the first time I stepped inside the wandered into Aotea Centre. Of all the social groups who can afford to pay for their own entertainment, I thought..

  • Up Front: The Missionary Position,

Lucrative that it took enough pages to become a book as opposed to a pamphlet. Not a bad read. Gave me a better understanding of the mythologising of the yankee boomers, the side roads, the wind in the hair, the navel gazing.
