    silly comments like the study I am quoting is from overseas and 10 years old.

    Silly? Seems like a pretty reasonable comment to me, since the context of this discussion was domestic violence in New Zealand now.

    She is quite strongly of the opinion that in certain relationships the female partner can and will deliberately goad the male partner into physical assault.

    When I was a little boy, my younger sister mastered the art of goading me until I lost my temper and hit her. I was the one who copped the blame. I used to regard that as unfair, but in fact, hitting people is worse than teasing them, and the mark of a good person is exercising restraint. Isn't it?

    I know that in an ordinary assault case, provocation is not a defence.

  • Up Front: The Missus,

    I don't want to derail this thread prematurely, but I need to point out that the site John Fouhy links to, while it appears to have an accurate copy of the Talmud, is run by someone who has carefully and selectively culled secondary sources for all the supporting pages, in order to cast them in the worst possible light. Indeed, I would not trust any particular page to have a correct text, nor would I trust any commentary presented there.

    This is why it prominently features the work of Elizabeth Dilling.

    People who poke around the rest of that site should be aware of its propagandist intent.

    (This is also totally bizarre - I was completely unaware of Come And Hear until this morning, when it cropped up elsewhere.)

    Father, dear father, come home with me now,
    The clock in the steeple strikes one;
    You said you were coming right home from the shop
    As soon as your day's work was done;
    Our fire has gone out, our house is all dark,
    And mother's been watching since tea,
    With poor brother Benny so sick in her arms
    And no one to help her but me,
    Come home! come home! come home!
    Please father, dear father, come home.

    Chorus:
    Hear the sweet voice of the child,
    Which the night-winds repeat as they roam;
    Oh who could resist this most plaintive of prayers
    "Please father, dear father, come home."
    Father, dear father, come home with me now,
    The clock in the steeple strikes two;
    The night has grown colder, and Benny is worse
    But he has been calling for you:
    Indeed he is worse, ma says he will die--
    Perhaps before morning shall dawn;
    And this is the message she sent me to bring
    "Come quickly, or he will be gone."
    Come home! come home! come home!
    Please father, dear father, come home.
    Chorus:

    Father, dear father, come home with me now,
    The clock in the steeple strikes three;
    The house is so lonely, the hours are so long,
    For poor weeping mother and me;
    Yes, we are alone, poor Benny is dead,
    And gone with the angels of light;
    And these were the very last words that he said
    "I want to kiss papa good-night."
    Come home! come home! come home!
    Please father, dear father, come home.

  • Current Status: Holidays,

    Judd, Stephen, reporting. Fellow PAS commenter harvestbird and I, accompanied by our respective partners, had lunch at la Casa Tiso yesterday, in the heart of cosmopolitan Berhampore.

    Our consensus was that we can finally reveal that Giovanni is in fact John Teesdale, formerly of Te Awamutu, backed by a writing team comprising a surprisingly large number of PAS regulars. Thank you to all those who contributed - you know who you are. (For the record John does have a creditable grasp of Italian and can quote large stretches of Dante from memory.)

    Kind hosts provided a sumptuous repast including pizza, pasta and pannacotta, a menu at once alliterative and evocative of the long-running gag that is the Giovanni Tiso persona. Table talk ranged over the restrictions of a Te Awamutu education (your choices: liking rubgy, or league!), the width of the main drag in Invercargill (delusions of grandeur, or designed to allow a bullock train to turn?) and home birth (eminently sensible, except when it's not).

    Eventually we forced ourselves to leave so that Saturday's errands could be completed. It could be that we'll reprise the Tiso gag in the future, if we feel inclined.
