  • Hard News: Off the back of the deck,

Sacha, I broadly agree with Kamiya. The US Israel lobby is Israel's worst friend, egging Israel on to worse and and worse things. I would also point out that AIPAC et al represent a minority of US Jewish opinion and that evangelical eschatology has a lot to answer for in that department.

  • Hard News: Off the back of the deck,

The 700 hundred figure is hyperlinked to a Reuters report dateline 15th Jan, ie today NZ time.

Here is the link in case you missed it: http://uk.reuters.com/article/middleeastCrisis/idUKLF220621

    1. Genocide of Palestineans has been going on since 1948.

I do not think that word means what you think it means.

    2. Pipes gave testimony to a US congress subcommittee. really unbiased, him and the two other Zionists.

That does not address the point I made, which is that Cloughley is trying to make Nazi comparisons that are simply wrong.

    3. A rabbi calling for murder. Lovely.

Only in the sense that all military action is murder. You will find clergy of all religions calling for it. Furthermore, the point is that Cloughley believes that supporting Israeli action disqualifies you from citizenship.

    4. Fuck off with the "and thjat's why Hamas takes such pains.." crap. How many have died from Hamas rockets? How many from Israeli bombs and shells? why was Israel so keen to provoke Hamas into restarting the rocket firing after they stopped? starving a population of 1.5 million. that's defensible, eh?

If Hamas is not as effective as the IDF, it is not for want of trying.

Let me be really clear that I personally do not support military action against Gaza. I think it's strategically and morally wrong. But I am tired of Israel being held to a higher standard than other countries by people whose outrage is notably absent elsewhere. I'm particularly unimpressed by long, tendentious screeds which are a whisker away from claiming a secret cabal of (racist, murdering, genocidal) Jews controls the US.

Therefore, as and when I have time and inclination, I will not be fucking off.

ooh, so Counterpunch is just like MEMRI? get a life, please.

Yes, Counterpunch publishes a lot of articles that are long on rhetoric and selective deployment of facts. Is that really controversial?

PS: if you're going to persist in "Israeli killing machine", how shall I refer to Hamas?

  • Hard News: Off the back of the deck,

stephen walker, I have read condemnation in strong terms from international leaders all over the world. I don't call that immune from criticism.

WRT to Cloughley's article, there are some specific things that I do find... overstated.

    1. Repeated use of the word "genocide". The last count I saw from Palestinian source was 700 dead in the 20 days this conflict has been going. There are almost 500,000 residents of Gaza. If this is genocide, what word is left for killing everybody?

    2. Pipes is a private citizen. (He's a kook like David Horowitz and shouldn't be advising anyone, but that's another story). His personal collection of reports of who is pro/anti Israel/Palesting is in no way comparable to informing in Nazi Germany, unless the professors so identified are detained, tortured and killed by the government. This is rhetorical bullshit designed to create parallels where none exist.

    3. (You didn't quote this bit, I wonder why?) "this rabbi was British. Here we have a British citizen supporting hatred and bigotry on a BBC religious program. But of course he isn't really British. He is an Israeli religious propagandist of British citizenship whose main allegiance is to Israel. ... They unconditionally promote Tel Aviv's plans and policy and wield amazing influence over politicians and businesses." Well fuck, who can support Israel without being a traitor then? It's a conspiracy!

    4. 'Additional to the Geneva Conventions, 1977 . . . General Protection Against Effects of Hostilities: "Among others, the following types of attacks are to be considered as indiscriminate: An attack which may be expected to cause incidental loss of civilian life, injury to civilians, damage to civilian objects, or a combination thereof, which would be excessive in relation to the concrete and direct military advantage anticipated."'

And that's why Hamas takes such pains only to aim rockets at military targets, and its suicide bombers never attack civilians.

    --

If you're going sling around huge screeds from Counterpunch, I'm going to have to wade into the sewer and start quoting Ynet or MEMRI and then where will we be?

  • Hard News: Off the back of the deck,

    http://www.3news.co.nz/News/InternationalNews/International-Red-Cross-Israel-not-using-white-phosphorus-illegally/tabid/417/articleID/86896/cat/61/Default.aspx

The international Red Cross said Tuesday that Israel has fired white phosphorus shells in its offensive in the Gaza Strip, but has no evidence to suggest it is being used improperly or illegally.

The comments came after a human rights organization accused the Jewish state of using the incendiary agent, which ignites when it strikes the skin and burns straight through or until it is cut off from oxygen. It can cause
    horrific injuries.

The International Committee of the Red Cross urged Israel to exercise "extreme caution" in using the incendiary agent, which is used to illuminate targets
at night or create a smoke screen for day attacks, said Peter Herby, the head of the organization's mines-arms unit.

"In some of the strikes in Gaza it's pretty clear that phosphorus was used," Herby told The Associated Press. "But it's not very unusual to use phosphorus to create smoke or illuminate a target. We have no evidence to suggest it's being used in any other way."

    Good point, StuffnThings.

My standard snark at Ferrit used to be "why didn't they just buy Pricespy?" Because Pricespy works extremely well in its sphere of computer-related gear. I use it all the time and love its simplicity and effectiveness.

But actually, when you think about it, computer parts etc are fairly unusual products, a) because 90% if not all of what the buyer needs to know can be summed up in a list of technical attributes and b) because the purchaser usually has a very specific idea what they need, probably even before they go looking. So a catalogue-type approach works really well online, just as it does for dead-trees mail order.

Ferrit had the problem that they used a single interface to display all kinds of products, including the sort where you really need an interface appropriate to the product (colour swatches, rotating 3d view, whatever).

I actually did use Ferrit towards the end, but just as a sort of guide to the going rate before looking on Trademe or setting off on foot into town.
