  • Hard News: The Peter Principle,

My instinct is that Jackson's report could be a great thing. There are certainly problems with the comission and it's long overdue for a philosophical shakeup.

IMO, what's needed is a lot more funding for low-budget projects (with no requirement for commercial success.) With just 4% of it's annual budget it could provide twenty $50,000 packages for new filmmakers* (digivideo at that price, I guess.) Sure, 95% of them would be crap, but after couple of years, you'd start to see some real talent emerge. 3 or 4 features a year will just not see that happen.

The point is, surely, to best utilise NZ's filmmaking talent. Too many talented people are just out of the loop at the moment.

*add half again for the management of it, I suppose.

surely ejection from the Party would remove him from the list and thus from Parliament?

Nope. Even if ejected from the Nats, we're stuck with him for 2 1/2 years more unless he decides to go.

  • Island Life: The resignation of Captain Worth,

as I'm far from impressed with either Key or Goff it's a little implausible to make claims of partisan hackery.

    Nice try, yourself.

Meanwhile, 3410, if someone comes to you claiming they've been subject to sexual harassment you'd take it seriously, and do everything in your power to make sure its reported promptly to the appropriate authority. And that wouldn't be the CEo's office.

It's not a workplace matter. Worth was not an employee, an employer, or a work colleague of the complainant. There is no CEO in a relevant analogy. This is about two things: conduct unbecoming of a Minister, and misuse of Ministerial position.

If the Prime Minister was not the proper authority to report this to, I've yet to hear what is, and if the Prime Minister was not the proper authority to report this to, then the Prime Minister surely has a greater obligation than does the Leader of the Opposition to report it to the proper authority.

In all honesty, if Key would just say "Yeah, I could've handled it better, I suppose," then I, a life-long Nat-hater ;), would say "Fair enough. Let's move on to the substance of the matter."

  • Island Life: The resignation of Captain Worth,

does anyone really think that if Goff and Key were departmental senior managers, someone would be making an appointment to sign on for a benefit come Monday morning?

    Key? Maybe. Goff?.. lol.

According to the Nat line, Goff is simultaneously politicising the incident and not politicising it enough. It's ridiculous, and points to, if anything, the level of fear that Key will come out of this looking bad. And why wouldn't he? It's clear Key made no real attempt to investigate the complaint in the first place -- according to his own version of events he didn't even ask to see the evidence -- and now he's questioning the authenticity of the evidence (which he's still dodging) after having said that he "would have sacked [Worth]" if he hadn't quit.

This outsider, at least, would've cut Key a lot more slack -- he's learning, after all -- if the Nats weren't trying so hard to get this pathetic Goff-gate ball rollling. Such transparent blame-shifting only serves to highlight the blame they're attempting to shift.

  • Not Guilty,

The last three months has been quite a rollercoaster, with much debate over the quality of photographic evidence and some odd judicial behaviour, etc., and whilst it has been fascinating, I'm glad that it is finally all over.

I know that many will disagree with the decision, but I hope that all will put these feelings aside and join me in congratulating Christobelle on her victory.

    "textes"

Too generous an interpretation. It's precisely the "...xt..." sound that Key has trouble with, hence "texes." Given that, why doesn't he just say "tex," like (almost) everyone else?

And just so that I don't sound like a complete wanker, allow me to report that I do and say things wrongly all the time. :)

So, the scandal is now about "what the Labour leader knew and when he knew it" or... whether Goff said he had evidence when it was not actually in his posession , or... something.

Really, watching The News these days is like living in a Lewis Carrol story.

    As do Technics.
