  • Legal Beagle: A little known story of…, in reply to Graeme Edgeler,

a time between a re-enrolment and census filing

The period could be up to 20 or so years in the case of a child born (like Bevan) whose parents didn't know their ancestry at the time, but found out by the time of the child's first Maori option (or indeed were unwilling to acknowledge their ancestry but the child was). They could honestly answer "don't know" on four or five census forms but the child would be eligible for the Maori roll.

Those might be some of the cases that go to make up Stats computation.

  • Field Theory: Mr Collins in Japan, in reply to Rossh,

Possibly their justification is similar to the way the NZ government directs millions of our dollars into vanity rugby teams and racing yachts.

  • Field Theory: Mr Collins in Japan,

Yes, there are quite a few Japanese South Americans, a president of Peru was one.

I'd guess they might remigrate, a bit like Aussies and Kiwis in London.

Maybe Quentin Taratino will make a movie?

Or it could be another part of my favourite imaginary video game: Kung Fu Rugby

  • Hard News: Marshall and the Media,

Possibly Marshall should go on OE - that kind of journalism and 'eccentricity' is much more tolerated in the UK tabloids, for instance.

(One of the Sun's leading journalists brutally murdered his entire family* and was reinstated on his release).

    * Ok, it was manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility, I'm using the term 'murder' colloquially. And he might have had other family apart from his wife. But all killing is brutal, really.

  • Hard News: My Food Bag: is it any good?,

On the subject of freebies, I noticed Grant Smithies' column in the SST was dedicated to a review of a (declared) freebie luxury camping experience.

All very nice, but given the rate card for a whole back page is probably in five figures, I wonder how the ad department feels about being undercut in this way?

If plugola by underpaid journos becomes the norm, will having a column be like being the doorman of a luxury hotel, where the 'employee' pays the employer for the role, rather than the usual arrangement?

  • Hard News: My Food Bag: is it any good?, in reply to Sofie Bribiesca,

Very pretty use of Flash. But why does their co.nz redirect into a .com.au. You don't have to do that.

  • Legal Beagle: A little known story of…, in reply to Paul Campbell,

Does the size of an electorate depend on the total number of people of any age

Yes, for the good reason that MPs represent everyone, not just those old enough to vote. Also, some populations (such as Maori and Pasifica) have a higher population of young people and this should be taken into account, which is why the calculations are done as above.

One category that the current system allows for would be a hypothetical 5-year old of Maori descent, whose parents for whatever reason tick "don't know" on their form but once adult, discovers their whakapapa and enrols as a Maori voter.

    Does it also say:

"we use deliberate confusion as a marketing tool"

  • Legal Beagle: A little known story of…,

why is this better, more accurate number not used for anything else

Indeed. Possibly Stats prefer the general ethnicity datasets for all other purposes (it would be interesting to see how they align?)

The census and electoral registration forms are different: the census is yes/no/don't know while the registration form is simply yes/no. I'd suspect that when people who answer "don't know" are given a binary choice, they might tend to split between yes and know (this must have been researched...)
